3. DEFINITION OF INTERNET
The internet is a global system of
interconnected computer networks.
The internet in simple terms is a network of the
interlinked computer networking worldwide,
which is accessible to the general public.
These interconnected computers work by
transmitting data through a special type of
packet switching which is known as the “IP or
the internet protocol”.
4. DEFINITION OF INTERNET
It is a network of networks that consists of
millions of private, public, academic, business &
government networks of local to global scope
that are linked by a broad array of electronic
wireless & optical networking technologies.
The internet is also often referred to as “the
Net”.
5. DEFINITION OF INTERNET CONT…
Internet helps in 3 ways:-
To get information
Providing information
Compiling information
7. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET
1958-1964
1958- after USSR launches sputnik, first artificial
earth satellite, US forms the advanced research
projects agency(ARPA), the following year, within
the department of defense(DoD) to establish US
lead in science & technology applicable to the
military.
1961- first published work on packet switching.
8. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1958-1964
1964- other independent work in packet
switching at RAND institute & national physics
laboratory in England.
9. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1966-68
1966- Lawrence Roberts publishes overall plan
for an ARAPnet, a proposed packet switch
network.
1968- ARPA awards contracts for 4 nodes in
ARPANET to UCLA(university of California at los
Angeles)[network measurement], stand ford
research institute [network information center],
UCSB(interactive mathematics] and U
Utah(graphics);
BBN(bolt, beranek, Newman) gets
contract to build the IMP(internet message
processors switches).
10. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1969
7/4/1969- first RFC(“host switch” by Steve
Crocker) basis for the network control
protocol(NCP).
2/9/1969- Leonard kleinrock’s computer at UCLA
becomes first node on the ARPANet.
29/10/1969- first packets sent;
Charlie Kline attempts use of remote login from UCLA to SRIG
System crashes as “g” in entered.
11. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1967-71
1967-1972:- vint Cerf, graduate student in
kleinrock’s lab, works an application level
protocols for the ARPANet.
1971:- ray Tomlinson of BBN writes email
application.
derived from 2 existing:- an intra-
machine email program(SENDMSG) & an
experimental file transfer program(CPYNET)
12. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1971-73
1971:- first cross-country link installed by AT&T
between UCLA & BBN at 56 kbps.
Other networks:- ALOHA net, Telnet, Transpace.
1973:- Ethernet was designed in 1973 by Bob
Metcalfe at Xerox Palo Alto research
center(PARC).
13. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1972-74
1972-74:- Robert Khan & Vint Cerf develop
protocols to connects network without any
knowledge of the topology or specific
characteristics of the underlying nets.
1972:- Robert Khan gives first public
demonstration of ARPAnet(now 15 nodes) at
international conference on computer
communication.
14. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1974-78
1974:- first full draft of TCP produced.
Nov 1977:- first 3-network TCP/IP based
interconnection demonstrated linking SATNET,
PRNET, ARPANET in a path leading from Melo
park, CA to university college London & back to
USC/ISI.
1978:- TCP split into TCP and IP.
15. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1981-84
1981:- term “internet” coined to mean collection of
interconnected networks.
1982:- ISO release OSI 7 layer model.
1/1/1983:- original ARPANET NCP was banned
from the ARPANET & TCP/IP was required.
1984:- Cisco system founded.
16. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1983-86
1984:- domain name system introduced; 1000+
hosts.
1986:- NSFNET created to provide access to 5
super computer including theory center at Cornell.
1983:- ARPANET split into ARPANET & MILNET;
MILNET to carry defense related traffic.
17. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1988-89
1988:- nodes on internet began to double every
year.
Nov 1998:- internet worm affecting about 10% the
60000 computers on the internet.
1998:- internet assigned number authority (IANA)
established in December with Jon Postel as its
director. Postel was also the RFC editor & US
domain registrar for many years.
18. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1990-93
1990:- ARPANET ceases to exist.
1990:- Tim Berners-Lee develops hypertext
system with initial version of HTML & HTTP & first
GUI web browser called “world wide web
(WWW)”.
19. EVOLUTION OF INTERNET CONT…
1990-93
1990:- first ISP world std.com
1991:- NSFNET lifted restrictions on use of
NSFNET for commercial purposes; Linux was
released by Linux Torvalds.
1992:- internet society founded.
1993:- INTERNIC created by NSF to provide
internet services
