directory service is a network service and i will describe in this presentation that how identifies directory service and other description also added.
2. • Directory service is a network service that identifies all
resources on a network & makes them accessible to users
and applications.
• Resources include e-mail addresses, computers, &
peripheral devices such as printers.
• Ideally , the directory service should make the physical
network topology & protocols transparent so that a user on
a network can access any resource without knowing where
or how it is physically connected.
3. A directory service is the collection of software &
processes that store information about your enterprise,
subscribers, or both, & make that information available to
users.
A directory service consists of a least one instance
(example) of Directory Server & at least one directory
client program.
Client programs can access names, phone numbers,
addresses, & other data stored in the directory service.
4. An example of a directory service is a domain name
system (DNS) server.
A DNS server maps computer hostnames to IP addresses.
Thus, all of the computing resource (hosts) become
clients of the DNS server.
Mapping hostname allows users of computing resource to
easily locate computers on a network by remembering
hostnames rather than IP addresses.
5. • A limitation of a DNS server is that it stores only two
types of information: names & IP addresses.
• A true directory service stores virtually unlimited types of
information.
6. Directory Server stores all user & network
information in a single, network-accessible. Many
kinds of different information can be stored in the
Directory Server.
• Physical device information, such as data about the
printers in an organization, such as location, color
or black & white, manufacturer, date of purchase,
& serial number.
7. Public employee information, such as name , email
address, & department.
Private employee information, such as salary,
government identification number, home addresses,
phone number, & pay grade.
Contract or account information ,such as the name
of client final delivery date, biding information ,
contract numbers, & project dates.
