Reading Fractions A fraction is a number that stands for part of a whole. A fraction has two parts. 3 4 The denominator (the number below the line) tells how many equal parts are in the whole. The numerator (the number above the line) tells how many of those equal parts the fraction stands for.
You can use a fraction to name a part of a single object What fraction of the pizza has been eaten? REMEMBER: The numerator names the part of the whole and the denominator names how many total parts there are. 1 8 7 8
You can use a fraction to name part of a group. What fraction of the group are men? REMEMBER: The numerator names the part of the whole and the denominator names how many total parts there are. 3 5 2 5

Adding Fractions with like denominators Lee is baking cupcakes. He uses of a stick of butter for the batter and of a stick of butter for the icing. How much butter does he use in all? If the fractions have like denominators, add the numerators and keep the denominators the same. 3 8 3 8 + = 3 8 + 3 8 = 6 8
Subtracting Fractions Ronise buys ¾ yard of felt. She used ¼ of it for an art project. How much felt does she have left? If the fractions have like denominators, subtract the numerators and keep the denominators the same. 2 4 or 1 2
