DEFINITION:
   In economics, the term recession describes the reduction of a
    country's gross domestic product(GDP) for at least two quarters. The usual
    dictionary definition is "a period of reduced economic activity", a business
    cycle contraction.

   The US-based National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)
    defines economic recession as: "a significant decline in the economic activity
    spread across the country, lasting more than a few months, normally visible
    in real GDP growth, real personal income, employment (non-farm payrolls),
    industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.”

• According to ILO, global unemployment in
  2009 could increase over 2007 by a range
  of 18 million to 30 million workers, and
  more than 50 million if the situation
  continues to deteriorate.
• The ILO report also said that in this last
  scenario some 200 million workers, mostly
  in developing economies, could be pushed
  into extreme poverty.
