ManohlaDargis, New York Times “Fast, periodically spit-funny and often grotesquely violent”. Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, “A mosh pit of a comic-book movie that dares you to dive into its anarchy”.

4. Newspaper Review Celebrity, Alex Zane rated this movie 5/5 and said “Based on Mark Millar's comic book Kick-Ass, it is astounding from start to end”. This written review was published in ‘The Sun’ newspaper which has a very popular circulation.

5. IMDb Reviews Roger Ebert from the Chicago Sun-Times Rated 8/10 from 158,422 users. User review: “Best original superhero movie to date”. Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert wasn’t a fan of the movie and said it didn’t meet up to the standards he expected.

The Reviews based on Audience Expectations Narrative, the genre, the stars in a movie and the director are all very important in a movie because they are factors which help to meet certain audience expectations. Depending on the audiences reviews and opinions, a review is then written about that film. I am going to explain each of the factors narrative, genre, stars and the director thoroughly over the next few slides, whilst relating to the movie ‘Kick-ass’ to help show how the above factors are important to engage an audience. If an audience is engaged, that means the movie is very well produced/directed and therefore this helps to make the majority of reviews more positive. If the movie doesn’t engage the target audience, this might be a reason to a negative review.

7. The Narrative The narrative in a film is very important because it is what the film is about (the storyline). The characters are also important to help reflect the genre, for example, Propps theory was that there is approximately nine characters that make a film successful and engage the target audience, for example the hero and the villain etc. The narrative is definitely a major factor in a films popularity. To get good reviews, the movie must be well narrated so that the target audience is appealed to and the film is interesting to watch.

8. The Genre The genre in a film is also very important because it helps the audience decide if they want to watch the movie. For example, if the film was an action film, most of the audience would probably be teenagers/young adults (possibly mostly male). In the movie ‘Kick-ass’ the movie is aimed towards the target audience of teenagers/young adults/adults because of the sexual content, swearing and violent scenes. The genre of the movie kick-ass is action/thriller /comedy. These movies are usually aimed at audiences of an older age due to some of the disturbing scenes that may upset children. The genre of a film is reflected through the narrative and by the characters/costume/mise en scene in the film.

9. The Stars Movie makers are very dependant upon the stars that feature in their films. This is because some stars for example Daniel Craig are associated with certain genres of movie and sometimes help to attract/engage an audience if they are well-liked/well-known in that genre of film. Daniel Craig features mostly in action/sci-fi movies because he was in James Bond and Cowboys and Aliens. Audiences/reviews are sometimes really successful/positive if a certain star is featured in that movie. It’s harder for new actors/actresses to make it in the film industry if they aren’t associated with a specific genre of film.

10. The Director The director of a film is another very important factor in order for a film to be successful and engaging to an audience and to the media. For example, the director Steven Speilbergwho produced ET, War of the Worlds and many other films. Jurassic Park is another very successful movie that was directed and produced by Steven Speilberg. Due to him being associated with very successful movies, this in turn makes movies appeal to an audience if they like other previous movies that have been directed by him. This is the same with other directors too. If they are liked and very good at what they do, then reviews are good and the majority of the time their movies are top box office hits.
