6. Island Test Site
To address technical issues in island projects, we set up the Island Test Site to simulate up
to 100% renewable energy systems. The grid based system can be configured to use wind,
irradiation and load measurements from anywhere.

EDA seems the ideal partner because the people are concerned about their islands and well aware of their dependence. Therefore they are already maximizing the use of renewables. Together with EDA we identified Graciosa as the ideal candidate, because it has good wind and sun resource and no other options like hydro or geothermal. This is an overview of the islands main characteristics. 1200 people plus tourists consumed about 5.3 GWh in 2004 and will approximately consume 6.7 GWh in 2008 which we took as the base year for our calculations. The load peaks in summer which fortunatly consides with the renewable energy potential on the island
