This document provides information about a DNA extraction lab. It includes a list of materials needed for the lab such as a wooden stick, pipette, conical tubes, soap, water, ethanol, and plant samples. It instructs students to make a flow-gram and mix detergent every minute for 5 minutes. The purpose is to extract DNA and make general observations. It also includes introductory information about DNA structure including that DNA is made up of nucleotides with different nitrogenous bases that code for traits.
2. Warm-ups!
O What is the chemical equation for
photosynthesis?
O What is the chemical equation for cellular
respiration?
O What are the steps of cellular respiration?
O Which step(s) do not require oxygen?
O Where does each step occur in the cell?
O *feel free to draw it out.
O What do you know about DNA and what do
you want to know?

O One wooden stick
O 1 pipette
O 1 50 ml conical tube
O 1 15ml conical tube
O Tube holder optional
O Soap
O 20mL water
O Waste beaker
O Ethanol
O Wheat Germ, Strawberry, Banana?
12. DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid
The structure of DNA is a double stranded
helix
DNA is important because it codes for all of
our traits.

13. DNA is a type of nucleic acid made up of
monomers called nucleotides
15. Warm up!!
O What are the 3 parts of a nucleotide?
O Which part makes each nucleotide different
O Work on your study guide until 8:50a
TO DO:
O Take out Photosynthesis and Cell Resp.
Annotations
O Take out Field Trip form with 5$
O Email Mackenzie at
mshultz@hightechhigh.org if you want study
help after school
16. Field Trip
O On Tuesday of Next Week!! Yay!!!
O You can bring a snack and water
O Wear comfortable clothing and shoes we
will be doing a lot of walking.
17. O The nitrogenous base is what makes each
type of nucleotide different
18. O The phosphate and the ribose sugar make
up the back bone of the DNA
19. There are 4 types of nucleotides that make up DNA
Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
Thymine

20. Chargaff’s Ratio shows that the number of Adenine is
always equal to the number of Thymine and the
number of Guanine is always equal to the number of
Cysteine.
