The pool safety laws introduced back in the year 1991 in Queensland were regarded as the toughest in Australia. However, since the introduction of these laws the incidences related to child drowning’s has more than halved.

3. It has been recorded that in
the last three years 18 young
children drowned in their
own swimming. The review
relating to new and
improved pool safety laws is focused on a
reduction in immersion injuries of a serious
nature as well as the amount of drowning’s that
involve children under the ages of five.

4. Since the announcement of the latest pool
safety laws, there was a committee established
for pool safety. The members include groups
for “child and water” safety, industries in local
government and Queensland Government
representatives.

5. The tasks relating to the committee include
consideration in key areas for safety in swimming
pools. In addition, the committees are able to
provide information on improvements for pool
safety laws in Queensland.

report, submissions have
been drawn up from various
stakeholders who include
considerations on various
international and interstate
regulatory systems in
regards to safety in
swimming pools.

7. Other Types of Swimming Pools
Pool safety laws are
applied to any swimming
pools that may be
associated with buildings
known as Class 3, such as
motels and hotels.

8. An appropriate type of phase-into period has
been applied to any existing swimming pools and
these same types of standards will apply to any
swimming pools associated to Class 1 types of
buildings which include villas and houses as well
as Class 2 types of buildings, like apartments and
flats.
