This document provides an introduction to computers and their structure. It defines a computer as an electronic device that can accept data as input, process it, and produce output from the processing. It describes the main components of a computer as the input devices, central processing unit, memory, output devices, and storage devices. It also outlines different types of computers like mainframes, mini computers, workstations, and PCs, and provides brief descriptions of each.
2. Computer
● A computer is an electronic device,
operating under the control of instructions
(software) stored in its own memory unit,
that can accept data (input), manipulate
data (process), and produce information
(output) from the processing.
● Computers can perform four general
operations, which comprise the information
processing cycle.

4. Mainframe computers
● They are very large powerful
computer systems that are
usually at the heart of a
business.
● It has a very powerful
processor, large amounts of
main memory and a huge
backing storage capacity.
● They are accessed through
one or more terminals.
Terminals consist of a
screen, keyboard, mouse but

5. Mini Computer
● A computer of a size intermediate
between a microcomputer and a
mainframe.
● Minicomputers have been stand-
alone computers (computer systems
with attached terminals and other
devices) sold to small and mid-size
businesses for general business
applications and to large enterprises
for department-level operations.
● In recent years, the minicomputer has
evolved into the "mid-range server"
and is part of a network.

6. Workstations
● A workstation is a computer intended for
individual use that is faster and more
capable than a personal computer.
● It's intended for business or professional
use (rather than home or recreational use).
● Workstations and applications designed for
them are used by small engineering
companies, architects, graphic designers,
and any organization, department, or
individual
● It requires a faster microprocessor, a large
amount of random access memory (RAM),
and special features such as high-speed
graphics adapters.
