As a UN body, the UN-REDD Programme is obliged to promote respect for, and seek the full application of, the provisions of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), including the right to give or withhold free, prior and informed consent (FPIC), particularly at the country level (UNDRIP, Art 42). To support UN-REDD Programme countries to implement the UNDRIP, the Programme conducted three regional consultations (Vietnam, June 2010; Panama, October 2010; Tanzania, January 2011) with representatives of Indigenous Peoples’ and civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to develop specific FPIC guidelines for countries participating in the Programme. This initiative responded to the demand from participating countries for concrete guidance on how to seek FPIC and provide effective grievance within the context of the UN-REDD Programme. With this ppt, the UN-REDD Programme presents the framework for the consolidated draft guidelines resulting from the three regional consultations.

This is a presentation that I did at the Rural Sociological Society annual meeting on working in Native American communities and doing so in a culturally sensitive and relevant manner. Please feel free to contact me for questions. Abstract: Building communities requires that the community/economic development or research efforts occur in the context of the community. Specifically, the sociocultural, economic, political and historical contexts of the community must be understood prior to conducting research and/or development efforts. While not everything can be known or anticipated, a deliberate approach to working in community context provides the developer with a more accurate picture of the challenges and opportunities associated with such research or development. Understanding community context is absolutely vital in working with tribal communities. In the history of the United States, Native Americans have endured significant economic, political, and geographical marginalization at best and genocide at worst. Similarly, Native Americans have also been subjected to unethical research practices by researchers in and outside of academia. Community and economic development efforts have largely been conducted for or on tribal communities with often little input from the tribes. This history had created a high level of distrust of outsiders and of academia at-large. This paper focuses on methods of conducting contextual community and economic development research and outreach in tribal communities. The methods of research and development efforts conducted in tribal context are explored. Examples of successful research and development are also provided.

This synthesis review of key factors supporting small-scale coastal fisheries management was commissioned by the Rockefeller Foundation through a contract with Itad Ltd. The work was carried out by a team based at IMM Ltd, in Exeter, UK, from July to September 2013. It was designed to provide an evidence base on the success factors in small-scale coastal fisheries management in developing countries and, in turn, to assist the Rockefeller Foundation in developing its strategy for its Oceans and Fisheries Initiative. In doing so, it identifies and describes some 20 key factors believed to influence success in small-scale coastal fisheries management. The synthesis first presents an outline of the methods used in the study followed by a background of coastal fisheries, an introduction to fisheries management themes, and a review and discussion of some of the critical factors that influence success. It then offers some conclusions and possible ways forward.

The Rockefeller Foundation

This synthesis was designed to provide an evidence base on the success factors in small-scale coastal fisheries management in developing countries and, in turn, to assist the Rockefeller Foundation in developing its strategy for its Oceans and Fisheries Initiative. In doing so, it identifies and describes some 20 key factors believed to influence success in small-scale coastal fisheries management. The report was completed via a rapid review of key sources of knowledge from formal published literature, institutional literature, key informants and Internet searches. The focus was on key success factors in achieving a balance of social, economic and ecological benefits from the management of small-scale coastal fisheries.
