OVERCOMING PERSONAL CRISIS AS A
STRONG LEADER
INTRODUCTION
When you reflect on your work life, you can be proud of
your leadership accomplishments and the balance you
have with your personal life but sometimes life isn’t always
perfect.
When bad things happen it can be difficult to deal with
problems while also going into work every day, particularly
when you’re relied on in a leadership role.
When you may feel like giving up, your employees will still
be looking to you as a guide and a mentor.
Maintaining your motivation and energy to carry out your
role will be difficult, but it is possible and you can do it.
HOW YOU CAN LEAD DURING A CRISIS
Admit the situation to yourself: You may want to
bury yourself in work and pretend that the crisis is not
happening, but pretending not to be in pain is
stressful. Try to accept your emotions and understand
that you may not be able to control the situation.
Express your emotions: Set aside time in your day
where you can focus on your situation. By scheduling
appointments with yourself, you can create a
‘container’ in which to think about whatever you want.
Compartmentalising these feelings means they’re
less likely to take over your life.
Take a step back: If you find yourself getting too
overwhelmed with work, step back and take slow,
deep breaths.
Rely on your team: If you are finding it hard to stay
on top of all your work, don’t be afraid to delegate
responsibilities. Trust your team to make some of the
smaller decisions for you.
Take time off if you need it: Consider taking some
time off if you’ve got personal or holiday time to use, if
you feel like you need some space to help you
address the issue.
Look after yourself: Focus on the good things in your life. Keep
eating healthily, exercising and getting enough sleep. This will
give you the strength to withstand your crisis, and the energy to
carry out your work duties.
Manage your time: Focus on getting the most important tasks
done – such as important deals – if you don’t have the strength
to work long hours.
Work from home: When coming into the office isn’t realistic,
think about using alternative methods to handle business
operations: online bill pay, cloud data storage, mobile email. Fit
your work around your life, not the other way around!
Embrace support: Focusing on work is important but it’s also
important to stay connected to your support network.
LEARNING TO REALIGN WORK-LIFE BALANCE
You may want to be seen as an indestructible leader,
but occasionally things happen and it’s okay to be
affected by them.
Even in these situations, it’s possible to manage your
emotions while working as you have the Power2Lead

Overcoming personal crisis as a strong leader

  • 2. INTRODUCTION When you reflect on your work life, you can be proud of your leadership accomplishments and the balance you have with your personal life but sometimes life isn’t always perfect. When bad things happen it can be difficult to deal with problems while also going into work every day, particularly when you’re relied on in a leadership role. When you may feel like giving up, your employees will still be looking to you as a guide and a mentor. Maintaining your motivation and energy to carry out your role will be difficult, but it is possible and you can do it.
