3. Love VERSUS Knowledge
(1 Corinthians 8:1-12)
The Issue: Can believers eat food
sacrificed to idols?
Knowledge says, “Yes!”
The Catch: Some do not have knowledge!
The Danger: By relying solely on
knowledge you may become a stumbling
block and sin against Christ! (Psa. 51:3-4)
3
4. Love VERSUS Liberty
Liberties & Rights are forfeited for love
(1 Corinthians 8:13; 9:1-18)
Love considers the well-being of the souls
of others (1 Corinthians 9:19-23)
Love demands self-discipline
(1 Corinthians 9:24-27)
Liberty can become liability
(1 Corinthians 10:1-29)
4
5. My Liberty VERSUS Your Conscience:
Three Guiding Principles:
Glorify God (10:31)
Give NO OFFENSE (10:32)
Seek others’ profit, not your own.
(10:33)
5
8. . 1 Corinthians 8:1 Now concerning
things offered to idols: We know that we all
have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but
love edifies.
8
9. 1 Corinthians 8:1
Knowledge Puffs Up

arrogant, but love edifies.

• . 1 Corinthians 5:2 You have become
arrogant and have not mourned… 5
10. 1 Corinthians 8:2-3
1
0
• . 1 Corinthians 8:2 If anyone supposes that
he knows anything, he has not yet known as
he ought to know; 3 but if anyone loves God,
he is known by Him.
• Let's get our priorities in order;
• Would you rather think you know something,
or be known by God?
11. 1 Corinthians 8:4, Idolatry
1
1
• . 1 Corinthians 8:4 Therefore concerning
the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know
that there is no such thing as an idol in the
world, and that there is no God but one.
12. 1 Corinthians 8:4, Idolatry Sacrifices
To Demons
1
2
• . 1 Corinthians 8:4 …we know that there is
no such thing as an idol in the world…
• Idols, idolatry, Yoga, martial arts, and false
religions, are nothing but they can be a means to
channel demons;
• . 1 Corinthians 10:20 No, but I say that the
things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice
to demons and not to God; and I do not want
you to become sharers in demons.
13. 1 Corinthians 8:5
“many gods and many lords”
• . 1 Corinthians 8:5 For even if there are so-
called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as
indeed there are many gods and many lords, 6
yet for us there is but one God…
• . John 10:34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not
written in your law,`I said, “You are gods”? 35 "If He
called them gods, to whom the word of God
came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

you are sons of the Most High.
• . Galatians 4:8 …when you did not know God, you
served those which by nature are not gods.
10

garden…

name to all generations.
• . Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD [“kurios”]
is our God [“kurios”], the LORD [“kurios”] is one!

eternity. Amen.

17. 1 Cor 8:6, Trinity / Tri-unity
17

were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible
and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or
authorities-- all things have been created by Him and for
Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things
hold together.
20. 1 Cor 8:6, “we exist through Him"
19
• If anything exists, and we do, there has to be a
cause for that effect. There must be a first
cause. There has to be an un-caused Cause.
Logic, reason, and science demand a Creator
of everything. The Cause must be greater than
the effect. Therefore, since we are personal,
intelligent, and have a moral nature, the Cause
must be greater than us, personal, more
intelligent, more alive, more powerful, and
more moral. A good God;
21. 1 Corinthians 8:7-8
Walk In Liberty
21
• . 1 Corinthians 8:7 However not all men have this
knowledge; but some, being accustomed to the idol
until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and
their conscience being weak is defiled. 8 But food will
not commend us to God; we are neither the worse if we
do not eat, nor the better if we do eat. [is legalism from a
weak conscience?]
• . Mark 7:19 because it does not go into his heart,
but into his stomach, and is eliminated?" (Thus He
declared all foods clean.)
• . Colossians 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your
judge in regard to food or drink…
22. 1 Cor 8:9-13, Walk In Liberty
• . 1 Corinthians 8:9 But take care that this
liberty of yours does not somehow become a
stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if someone sees
you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol's
temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be
strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? 11 For
through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined,
the brother for whose sake Christ died. 12 And so,
by sinning against the brethren and wounding their
conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble,
I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause
my brother to stumble. 24

24. 1 Cor 8:9, Walk In Liberty
24
• Christians have the greatest freedom because we
chose the way of the Lord, liberty in Christ. Rather
than remain a slave to sin.

and regulations that are restrictive and
smothering. But the Scriptures say Jesus came to
set us free from the law of sin and death.
• . Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon
me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring

forgotten his sermon notes. As it was too late
to send someone for them, he turned to the
congregation and said, by way of apology, that
this morning he should have to depend upon
the Lord for what he might say, but that for
the evening service, he would be better
prepared.”
• 2 Timothy 2:15, 21
Among the controversial questions at Corinth, there was the issue of whether or not a Christian should eat meat that had been sacrificed to idols. Paul uses the question to teach timeless truths about the demands love makes on those in the family of God. Love leads us to make allowance for those who know less than we do. It moves us to forfeit rights and liberties for the welfare of a brother’s conscience. It leads us to glorify God, refuse to offend others, and seek the profit of others above our own profit.
