10. POLYSLABS
ADVANTAGES OVER SHUTTERED SOLID SLABS AND PRECAST CONCRETE SYSTEMS
1. Polyslab formwork replaces steel or timber. It harnesses
the strength of the polystyrene blocks and has been tested
under the surveillance of the SABS and is designed to give a
factor of safety of 2.0 under construction loadings between
lines of temporary supports. Wolf noticed in Turkey that the
slabs are still fully shuttered and polystyrene blocks placed on
this acting only to replace some concrete and provide
insulation.
2. Cost comparisons with shuttered slabs by a Quantity Surveyor
show approximately 30 % saving.
POLYSLABS
ADVANTAGES OVER SHUTTERED SOLID SLABS AND PRECAST CONCRETE SYSTEMS.
3. Lightweight - Saves up to 5% per floor on foundations
and the supporting reinforced concrete structure
4. Excellent insulation increasing comfort zone and
reducing the electricity bill for air conditioning.
According to an electrical consultants report it cuts cost
by ±10% on cooling in Summer and ± 5% on heating in
winter.
5. Can span to 10 or more metres which by far exceeds
the capacity of manually erected precast concrete
slabs.
6. Because the underside is fully polystyrene only a
rhinolite skim coat is required.
11. POLYSLAB ADVANTAGES
7. Unlike systems using precast concrete ribs, Polyslabs
provide a complete polystyrene ceiling avoiding cracks
in the skim coat or rough cast plaster.
POLYSLAB ADVANTAGES
8. Where the ceiling finish is not important the Poly 'R‘
Slab allows the retraction and several reuses of the
formwork.
9. As seen on the photo, Polyslabs can be cut on site
with a hand saw to suit any shape on plan

13. DESCRIPTION OF NEW BLOCKS AND
CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE
2 a . POLYRIB BLOCKS – see fig. 7
The polystyrene strips can also be bundled together to form
maximum 500 mm wide x various mm deep Polyslab blocks
which are placed as fillers on shuttering separated by 20 mm
thick x various mm wide rib and cross rib spacers to still achieve
a continuous polystyrene soffit which can be skim-coated with
Rinolite. This can also easily be used for 2 way spanning slabs.
This means that the Polyfloors will be the predominant choice
for suspended slabs and enables a new patent to be established
as an alternative to the Polyslabs and Polystairs which are no
longer valid in other nations and will be expiring in 2020 in South
Africa. They will generally be cheaper than the present
Polyslab&Polystair systems as only the rib formers have to be
ordered from the factory and can also be formed from recycled
polystyrene rather than having to use 24 kg/cum density.
The disadvantage over the current Polyslab system is that the
polystyrene is no longer the sole formwork medium but has to
be placed on conventional steel or timber shuttering. The
required temporary supports for these though is substantially
reduced than is required for solid reinforced concrete slabs as
the revised Polyslab systems are much lighter. The other
advantage of the revised Polyslab is that the rib spacer is only 20
mm rather than 60 mm thick resulting in a 40 mm lesser overall
slab thickness and a 40 mm reduction in the thickness of the
blocks. The revised system is also safer as it does not rely on the
strength of the blocks supported by the floor centres which often
are a deterrent for specification by Clients, Architects &
Engineers.
DESCRIPTION OF NEW BLOCKS AND
CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE
14. POLYSTAIRS
Stairs are normally a builder’s nightmare.
Polystair construction is simple, based on the same system
as the Polyslab but placed at the required slope.
The polystyrene treads are optional, placed on the wet concrete.
Bird wire mesh is dressed over the treads and later screeded with
one or two layers of 1 part cement : 2 river sand : 2 plaster sand.
POLYSTAIRS
Decorating down lights can easily be installed and must be low
emission globes, the conduiting is easily housed in the
polystyrene ceiling.
15. POLYFLOORS
1. The Polyfloor system is extremely cost effective for spans
below 5 metres, easily erected and provides excellent free
Insulation.
2. This new system can be manufactured on site by the
contractor on the ground floor slab thus saving on transport
costs.
3. POLYFLOORS are approximately 50% lighter than
equivalent conventional concrete slabs, which make them
ideal as 1st floors over existing single story houses as
seen on the photo below.
4. The POLYFLOOR systems only require 1 line of
temporary supports.

17. POLYSTRUCTURES
Cost saving - a Quantity Surveyor's cost comparisons
indicate Polyform to be the following :
1. 41% on 230 mm common brick walls
2. 21% on M150 hollow block wall
3. 44% of Polyroofs over insulated sheeted or tiled roofs for
on site constructedstructures The flat roof can be designed
As a future first floor
4. Energy saving - The polystyrene in the walls and roof slabs
provide excellent insulation.
5. Fully tested - satisfactorilytestedfor fire [69 minute
resistance],water penetration,impact, chisel penetrationand
sound proof.
6. Simple construction- Ideal for do it yourself and community
involvement
POLYSTRUCTURES
7. Versatile- Polystructures can be constructed as mobile structures as a A
frames and Mobile bersions as seen
in the next slides or on site as in this photo.
8. In the on site constructed case conventional strip footings are
used and the Polypanelsare placed into slots formed using a
polystyreneslot former. Once the concrete has set this is
removed and the panels are placed verticallyaround the structure.
9. An even more cost effective and attractive alternative is the “ Poly A
Frame” where roof panels are erected in an “A” formation on a
Polygroundslab and both faces are plastered. By using a Polyfloor
the upper space can be used for additional accommodation

using a crane truck and placed on a level compacted sand bed.
10. Versatile- The Polyroofscan be flat or pitched up to 15

11. By raising the ceiling Polybunks can be installed providing
extra accommodationor storage.
12. Shaped polystyrene copings can be supplied for aesthetic
effects and deeper ones can be used on flat Polyroofsto
provide water storage.
13. Mobile structures can be docked together or placed on top of
one another.
14. Some municipalities do not charge rates as mobile
structures can be considered temporary.

The advantages over standard dry wall partitioning are cost, fire and acoustic resistance. The advantage over
brick or block partitions is that they are far lighter which saves on the design of suspended slabs and the whole

The Internal Polypartitions generally use 5O mm x 500 mm thick recycled polystyrene panels either full height or

Newton's Law
Acceleration has this important influence on damage,
because, as an object in movement, the building
obeys Newton' famous Second Law of Dynamics. The
simplest form of the equation which expresses the
Second Law of Motion is
F = MA. ( force = mass x acceleration )
LIGHT WEIGHT
The Polyslab was used in this building which saves 50 % over
a solid reinforced concrete slab.
If the brickwork was replaced by Polywalls the total reduction
in weight would be 70%
Therefore the reduction of the destructive force is a massive

29. POLYRESERVOIRS &
POLYPOOLS
The poly reservoir system is an adaptation
of the circular precast Ongamanzi system
which we used in rural Umgeni Water
projects in KZN.
They have the further advantages that
they do not require foundations and arte
a lot cheaper and easier to construct.
Because of the predominant use of
polystyrene they also are more
waterproof.
The Polypools also have these advantages
and the insulation allows them to be used
throughout the year. The rectangular
version requires small footings and the
corners require to be strapped after
plaster has been applied. These can also
be used above ground level to provide
security to toddlers and double up as
reservoirs or below ground level.

The Polyfloor can span some 4 metres
without temporary supports and is
