4. Maritsa
Maritsa is 480 km, the
longest river that runs solely
in the interior of
the Balkans. It has its origin
in the Rila Mountain in
Western Bulgaria, flowing
southeast between the
Balkan and Rhodope
mountain ,
past Plovdiv and Parvom ay
(where the Mechka &
Kayaliyka River joins it)
to Edirne, Turkey.
5. Danube
The Danube flows
southeast for 2,872 km
(1,785 mi), passing
through four Central
European capitals
before flowing into
the Black Sea via the
Danube Delta in
Romania and Ukraine.
6. Rhodope mountain
The Rhodope are a mountain
range in Southeastem Europe,
with over 0 83% of its area in
southern Bulgaria and the
remainder in Greece. Its highest
peak, Golyam Perelik (2,191 m),
is the seventh highest Bulgarian
mountain. The region is
particularly notable for the Karst
areas with their deep river
gorges, large caves and specific
sculptured forms, such as
the Trigrad Gorge.
7. Rila mountain
Rila is a mountain range in
southwestern Bulgaria and the
highest mountain range of
Bulgaria and the Balkans, with its
highest peak being Musala at
2,925 m. The massif is also the
sixth highest mountain in
Europe, (when each mountain is
represented by its highest peak
only), coming after the Caucasus,
the Alps, Sierra Nevada, the
Pyrenees and Mount Etna, and the
highest between the Alps and the
Caucasus. The larger part of the
mountain is occupied by the Rila
National Park.
8. Old mountain
The Old mountain is a mountain
range in the eastern part of the
Balkan Peninsula. The Balkan
range runs 560 km from
the Vrashka Chuka Peak on the
border between Bulgaria and
eastern Serbia eastward through
central Bulgaria to Cape
Emine on the Black Sea. The
highest peaks of the Stara
planina are in central Bulgaria.
The highest peak is Botev (2,376
m), located in the Central Balkan
National Park.
