The smart phone, and its application software, has increased a
presence in the creation of photographic artworks. Many photog-
raphers and artists now use their smart phones, and a number of
different apps, to modify and manipulate image capture. This tell-
ing exhibition showcases the work of a number of photographers,
invited from around the world, who use the smart phone to assist in
the creation of their work.

Interpretations of nomadism, power structures, and relationship
exploration are at the core of Florida State University’s art faculty
Joelle Dietrick’s and Judy Rushin’s current body of work. Dietrick
produces two-dimensional and time-based artworks that consider
contemporary nomadism and 21st century power structures.
Rushin’s work explores the relationships between people and spa-
tial environments through painting, sculpture, and installation.

A luminous retelling of the Orpheus myth, Eurydice reframes the
ancient tale of ill-fated love to focus not on the bereaved musician
but on his dead bride and on her struggle with love beyond the
grave. With direction and staging by Professor Deborah Jordan,
production design by Professor Ben Wilson, and original music by
Professor Scott Watkins, this play by Sarah Ruhl will prove to be
deeply affecting and wildly imaginative.

Box, John Ricci, Gary Starling, Scott Giddens, Billy Thornton,
and Rick Kirkland perform in their first feature concert as a
collective of world-class musicians. Their individual talents
will be highlighted in different ways throughout the evening,
which will host original pieces and arrangements by the
members of the jazz faculty.

Please join pianist Scott Watkins, violinist Marguerite Richardson,
cellist Shannon Lockwood, clarinetist Artie Clifton, and hornist
Sean Morgan in this program (rescheduled from last season) of

Clarinet Trio, and his dramatic Quartet in C minor.

A juried showcase of student work is a reflection of the contempo-
rary pulse in art making of Northeast Florida. The eclectic exhibi-
tion consists of a variety of media including animation, ceramics,
computer generated images, drawings, glass art, graphic design,
paintings, photographs, prints and sculpture. Always a favorite
among participants and viewers, awards are given for outstanding
work.

Malfi, inspired by John Webster’s classic tragedy The Duchess of
Malfi, brings to the screen a modern age story of love, betrayal,
rebellion, and…paintball. The feature film was written by
Jacksonville University alumni Brian Trumble and Matt
Watson, directed by Carolina Conte, and has its original
music score composed by Scott Watkins.

In a celebration of the 100th
year anniversary of the death of
renown cello pedagogue, performer, and composer David Popper,
Jacksonville University faculty members Dr. Shannon Lockwood
and Dr. Scott Watkins will be joined by guest artists Richard
Slavich and Katharine Knight, both cellists from the University of
Denver, Lamont School of Music, in a concert of pieces by Popper.
Art of the “Big Band”

JU students and faculty will combine to perform an evening of
original and eclectic big band jazz. Original compositions by JU
faculty members Chris Creswell and John Ricci will be featured
along with pieces by Guest Conductor and Boston-based composer

perform as a Guest Artist.

This two-person exhibition will feature works exploring the
physicality of layering form, material, and content. Frus, Assistant
Professor of Glass at JU, explores the symbiosis of natural
artifacts preserved and protected by glass forms. Kuonen,
Assistant Professor of Foundations, investigates the synthesis of
painting with additional forms and actions, producing works she
has coined as PLAYNTINGS. The exhibit can be described as
investigative, thought provoking, and a challenge to the tactile
nature of materials.

Children possess a distinct ability to see their world through
uninhibited perspectives. This two-person exhibition is a view of
this phenomenon through the interpretations of Kyungmin Park
and Britt Spencer. Park is a ceramic artist who creates figurative
sculptures that explore human foibles. Spencer is an illustrator
whose quirky characters reveal observational commentaries of
human life. The pairing of artistic content creates a platform for
viewer investigation, humor, and pity.

Howard Hanson’s opera Merry Mount

Composed in 1930 and rarely heard today, American composer
Howard Hanson’s Merry Mount is loosely based on Nathaniel
Hawthorne’s short story “The Maypole of Merry Mount.” Featur-
ing soprano Kimberly Beasley and new faculty member baritone
Jay Ivey. Concert also includes a premiere performance of a new
work for chorus and percussion by composer Donald McCullough.
The Jacksonville University Chorus is conducted by Tim Snyder.

The graduating seniors in the Division of Visual Arts will exhibit
their faculty-approved Senior Thesis projects in this annual show.
A variety of media will be represented including 2-dimensional
artworks and commercial applications, 3-dimensional sculptural
representations or installations, animated shorts, screenplay views,
and film productions. An added bonus, the seniors will present
their research and talk about the resulting artworks on March 31,
