2. MEETING WITH CIVIL AUTHORITIES,
REPRESENTATIVES OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
AND MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS
"Citadelle de Québec“ - Wednesday, 27 July 2022
3. How much we need to listen to and dialogue with one another, in order to step back
from the prevailing individualism, from hasty judgments, widespread aggressiveness
and the temptation to divide the world into good people and bad!
4. the residential school system, which harmed many indigenous families by
undermining their language, culture and worldview. In that deplorable system,
promoted by the governmental authorities of the time, which separated many
children from their families, different local Catholic institutions had a part.
5. The Holy See and the local Catholic communities are concretely committed to promoting the
indigenous cultures through specific and appropriate forms of spiritual accompaniment that
include attention to their cultural traditions, customs, languages and educational processes,
in the spirit of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
6. that “colonization has not ended; in many places it has been transformed, disguised and
concealed” (Querida Amazonia, 16). This is the case with forms of ideological colonization.
7. today too, there are any number of forms of ideological
colonization that clash with the reality of life, stifle the natural
attachment of peoples to their values, and attempt to uproot
their traditions, history and religious ties.
8. The indigenous peoples have much to teach us about care and protection for the family;
among them, from an early age, children learn to recognize right from wrong, to be truthful,
to share, to correct mistakes, to begin anew, to comfort one another and to be reconciled.
9. before the senseless folly of war, we have once again need to heal
forms of hostility and extremism and to cure the wounds of hatred
11. HOLY MASS at the National Shrine of Saint Anne de Beaupré
Lord Jesus, our way, our strength and consolation, like the disciples of Emmaus, we plead with you: “Stay
with us, because it is almost evening” (Lk 24:29). Stay with us, Lord Jesus, when hope fades and the night
of disappointment falls. Stay with us, for with you our journey presses on and from the blind alleys of
mistrust the amazement of joy is reborn. Stay with us, Lord, because with you the night of pain
turns into the radiant dawn of life. Let us say, in all simplicity: Stay with us, Lord! For if you
walk at our side, failure gives way to the hope of new life. Amen.
12. VESPERS WITH BISHOPS, PRIESTS, DEACONS, CONSECRATED PERSONS, SEMINARIANS
ANDPASTORAL WORKERS IN THE CATHEDRAL OF NOTRE DAME IN QUÉBEC
Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec - Thursday, 28 July 2022
13. we find ourselves in the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec,
the Cathedral of this particular Church and primatial see of Canada,
whose first Bishop, Saint François de Laval, opened the Seminary in
1663 and devoted his entire ministry to the formation of priests.
14. because we are a sign of Christ, the Apostle Peter urges us to tend the flock, to guide it, not
to let it go astray while busy about our own affairs. Care for it with devotion and tender
love. Peter tells us to do this “willingly”, not perforce, not as a duty, not as “professional”
religious personnel, sacred functionaries, but zealously and with the heart of a shepherd.
15. we are ourselves “tended” with merciful love; we will feel the closeness of God.
This is the source of the joy of ministry and above all the joy of faith. It is not about
all the things that we can accomplish, but about knowing that God is ever close to us,
that he loved us first, and that he accompanies us every day of our lives.
16. God does not want us to be slaves, but sons and daughters;
he does not want to make decisions for us, or oppress us with
a sacral power, exercised in a world governed by religious laws
17. Christian joy: it is a free gift, the certainty of knowing that we are loved, sustained and
embraced by Christ in every situation in life. Because he is the one who frees us from
selfishness and sin, from the sadness of solitude, from inner emptiness and fear, and gives us a
new look at life and history: “With Christ joy is constantly born anew” (Evangelii Gaudium 1).
18. Saint Paul VI distinguished secularization from secularism, a concept of life that totally separates
a link with the Creator, so that God becomes “superfluous and an encumbrance”, and generates
subtle and diverse “new forms of atheism”: “consumer society, the pursuit of pleasure set up as
the supreme value, a desire for power and domination, and discrimination of every kind”
19. a discerning view, while acknowledging the difficulties we face in
communicating the joy of the faith motivates us, at the same time, to develop
a new passion for evangelization, to look for new languages and forms of
expression, to change certain pastoral priorities and to focus on the essentials
20. We must find new ways to proclaim the heart of the Gospel to those who
have not yet encountered Christ. This calls for a pastoral creativity capable
of reaching people where they are living – not waiting for them to come –
finding opportunities for listening, dialogue and encounter
21. “The love that God gives us overflows into love... It is a love that prompts
the Good Samaritan to stop and take care of the traveller attacked by
thieves. It is a love that has no borders, that seeks the kingdom of God...
and this kingdom is universal” (Bernard LONERGAN, ‘The Future of Christianity’
22. MEETING WITH A DELEGATION OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN QUÉBEC
Archbishop’s Residence in Québec - Friday, 29 July 2022
23. it was your life and experiences, the indigenous realities of these lands,
that have touched me, remained with me, and will always be a part of
me…… I also feel a part of your family, and for this, I am honoured
24. Holy Mother of God: no creature deserves to be called a pilgrim more
than Mary, for she is always, even today, even at this moment,
a pilgrim, treading the path between heaven and earth, in order
to show us God’s care and to lead us by the hand to her Son
25. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha.
We venerate her for her
holy life, but we can well
imagine that her
sanctity, marked by an
exemplary devotion to
prayer and work, and
her ability to endure
many trials with
patience and meekness,
were also made possible
by certain noble and
virtuous traits inherited
from her community
and the indigenous
environment in which
she grew up
27. MEETING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AND ELDERS
Primary school in Iqaluit - Friday, 29 July 2022
28. How evil it is to break the bonds uniting parents and children, to damage
our closest relationships, to harm and scandalize the little ones!
29. you were made to soar upwards, towards the most genuine, true and beautiful
desires that you cherish in your hearts, to love God and to serve your neighbour
30. You were made to fly, to embrace the courage of truth and the beauty of
justice, to “elevate your moral temper, to be compassionate, to serve others
and to build relationships” (cf. Inunnguiniq Iq Principles 3-4). To sow seeds of
peace and loving care wherever you are; to ignite the enthusiasm of those all
around you; to keep pressing forward and not to flatten everything out
31. Keep thinking of
the arctic swallow
that in Spanish we
call a “charrán”.
It does not let head
winds or sudden
changes in
temperature stop
it from flying from
one end of the
earth to the other
32. God never ceases to have confidence in you, not for a second. He believes in your talents.
When you seek him, you will come to realize how the path he calls you to follow always goes
upwards. You will realize this when you look up at the sky as you pray, and especially when
you contemplate him on the cross. You will come to realize that Jesus, from the cross, never
points his finger at you; he embraces you and encourages you, because he believes in you
even at those times when you stop believing in yourself. So never lose hope, fight, give it your
all, and you will not be sorry. Go forward on your journey, “step by step towards the best”
(cf. Principle 6). Set the navigator of your lives on a great destination: upwards!
33. Each day you are
called to bring new
light into the
world, the light
of your eyes,
the light of your
smile, the light of
the goodness that
you and you alone
can bring
34. Dear brother, dear
sister, Jesus is close to
you and he wants to
light up your heart, to
make you come to the
light. He said of himself:
“I am the light of the
world” (Jn 8:12), but he
also told his disciples:
“You are the light of
the world” (Mt 5:14)
35. what is the power that enables
us to separate the light from
the darkness within us, that
enables us to say “no” to the
temptations of evil and “yes”
to all that is good? It
is freedom. Freedom does not
mean doing everything I want
and acting as I please.
Freedom is not about what I
can do in spite of others, but
what I can do for others.
Freedom is not total caprice,
but responsibility. Freedom,
along with life, is the greatest
gift that our heavenly
Father has given us
36. “Hockey combines discipline and creativity, tactics and physical
strength; but team spirit always makes the difference; it is essential
for responding to the unpredictability of every game”
37. The Holy Spirit knows how to do this better than me; he is better than all of us. Because
He inspires the Pope’s decisions, He always inspires. Because He is alive in the Church. The
Church cannot be conceived without the Holy Spirit, He is the One who makes a difference
