3. Mat 1:1-17 y LK 3:23-38 presents Joseph
as belonging to the genealogy of King David
4. According to the gospel of Luke, Joseph was son of Heli or Elí (Luke 3:23).
According to the gospel of matthew, jacob was the father of Joseph (Mateo 1:16).
5. The scriptures refer to Joseph as “just” (Mat 1:19),
which implies he was faithful to the Torah and was holy.
6. THE GOSPEL CONTEXT
HIS MARRIAGE TO MARY
"Joseph, Son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which
is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call
his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins" (Mt 1, 20-21). RC 2
7. THE ANNUNCIATION
"Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor
with God. And behold, you will conceive in your
womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name
Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of
the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the
throne of his father David" (Lk 1:30-32). RC 2
8. "How can this be, since I do not know man?" (Lk 1:34)
The angel responds: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and
the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the
child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God" (Lk 1:35). RC 2
9. "Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.
When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph,
before they came together she was found to be with child
of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 1:18). (Mt 1, 18), RC 2
10. "her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to
put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly" RC 3
11. 'Joseph, son of David,
do not fear to take Mary
your wife, for that which
is conceived in her is of the
Holy Spirit; she will bear a
son, and you shall call his
name Jesus, for he will save
his people from their sins'"
(Mt 1:20-21).
RC 3
12. "When Joseph
woke from sleep,
he did as the angel
of the Lord
commanded him
and took Mary as
his wife" (Mt 1, 24). RC 3
13. "Joseph did as the angel of the Lord commanded him
and took his wife“ (Mt 1, 24). RC 1
14. Joseph, a just man, was outstanting family man;
he treated Mary with maximum respect and support,
and served as God willed it, as a role model for Jesus.
15. He has a humble and mature way of serving ,
and of participating in the plan of salvation RC 1
16. II - THE GUARDIAN OF THE MYSTERY OF GOD
"And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment
of what was spoken to her from the Lord" (Lk 1:45). RC 4
17. What he did
is the clearest “
obedience of faith"
(cf. Rom 1:5; 16:26;
2 Cor 10:5-6).
One can say that what
Joseph did united him in
an altogether special
way to the faith of Mary.
He accepted as truth
coming from God the
very thing that she had
already accepted at the
Annunciation. RC 4
18. Joseph is the first to share in the faith of the Mother of God and that in doing so
he supports his spouse in the faith of the divine annunciation RC 5
19. The Service of Fatherhood
Joseph's marriage to Mary is the juridical basis of his fatherhood. RC 7
20. While clearly affirming
that Jesus was conceived
by the power of
the Holy Spirit,
and that virginity
remained intact
in the marriage
(cf. Mt 1:18-25; Lk 1:26-38),
the evangelists refer to
Joseph as Mary's husband
and to Mary as his wife
(cf. Mt 1:16, 18-20, 24;
Lk 1:27; 2:5).
- RC 7
22. . The Savior began the work of salvation by this virginal
and holy union, wherein is manifested his all-powerful
will to purify and sanctify the family –
that sanctuary of love and cradle of life."
23. Joseph showed Jesus "by a special gift from heaven, all the natural love,
all the affectionate solicitude that a father's heart can know.“ - RC 8
24. an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.
“Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother
and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you,
for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
25. So he got up, took the child and his mother
during the night and left for Egypt, where
he stayed until the death of Herod. (Mateo 2:13-18).
26. After Herod died, an angel of the Lord
appeared in a dream to Joseph in
Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child
and his mother and go to the land of
Israel, for those who were trying to
take the child’s life are dead.”
27. So he got up, took the child
and his mother and went
to the land of Israel.
But when he heard that
Archelaus was reigning in Judea
in place of his father Herod,
he was afraid to go there.
Having been warned in a
dream, he withdrew to
The district of Galilee,
and he went and lived
in a town called Nazareth
(Mat 2,19-22)
28. Joseph is one of the central figures of Christianity,
an exceptional man
29. It is in the Holy Family, the original "Church in miniature”
that every Christian family must be reflected RC 7
30. by divine disposition he was guardian, and according to human opinion,
father of God's Son. Whence it followed that the Word of God was subjected
to Joseph, he obeyed him and rendered to him that honor
and reverence that children owe to their father.“ - RC 8
31. The gospel of Matthew in Greek points out that Jesus was the “son of the artesan” (Mt 13:55a)
The gospel of Mark says that Jeus himself did this craft:
«Isn’t this the carpenter? (Marcos 6:3).
32. Ireneus of Lyon
Writes that Joseph
took good care of Jesus
and so also showed
loving care for Mary
and gladly dedicated
himself to the
education of Jesus.
He also guards and
protects the Mystical
Body, the Church, of
which Mary is figure
and model
33. the path that was Joseph's -his pilgrimage of faith -
ended first, that is to say, before Mary
stood at the foot of the cross on Golgotha, RC 6
34. Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484) introduced
the feast of St Joseph in the Roman Breviary
35. Bonaventure of Fidanza, John Duns Scotus, Peter John Olivi, Ubertine of Casale,
Bernardine of Siena, and Bernardine of Feltre promoted the patronage of Joseph
of Nazareth because he is a model of fidelity, humilty, poverty,
and obedience, for the followers of St Francis of Assisi
36. on 15 august 1989,
On the centenary ,
Pope John Paul II
dedicated to him
the apostolic exhortation
Redemptoris custos,
(Guardian del Redentor).
37. Joseph of Nazareth was declared patron of the family
and is considered the patron of a happy death ,
since he died in the arms of Jesus and Mary
38. Pope Pius IX proclamed him 1870 patron of the Universal Church
39. Since he worked as a carpinter, he is considered the patron of work
especially of craftsmen, by the declaration of Pius XII in 1955, who wished
to give a Christian tone to the feast of the international day of workers.
40. The catholic church also declared him as protector against debts
and Pope Benedicto XV aslo declared him as patron
against communism and moral degradation
41. Paleo-Christian
iconography shows
Joseph of Nazareth
as a young man.
eg. on a stone of III
century in the catacombs
of St Hipolito in Rome,
and also on the
sarcophagus of St Celso
dated from the IV
century, in Milan.
The Patristic also
considered him to be
a young man
