2. Definition Prime Factorization is making a multiplication equation of a number that consists of prime numbers that has a product of the original number. 50=5 x 5 x 2 Or 50=52 x 2

4. Find Factors of Number The first step of a factor tree can almost always gives you a prime number . 5 10 50

5. Continue until all Factors are Prime The second step is the same as the first, except it is done on the original factors until all numbers are prime. 5 2 5 10 50 5 x 5 x 2 = 50

6. Convert to Exponents If any numbers are stated more than once they can be converted to exponents. 52 5 x 5 x 2 = 50

7. HOWEVER! Prime factorization does NOT work for prime numbers or the number 1.

8. Finding a LCM with Prime Factorization First use prime factorization for the two numbers you want to find the LCM for. 3 3 3 2 9 6 2 2 18 12

9. Find Common Prime Factors Find the repeated prime factors in each factor tree and other prime factors.(repeated factors can only be stated twice) 3 3 3 2 2 2 9 6 18 12

10. Convert to equation Take the prime factors and convert them to a multiplication sentence.(Don’t repeat doubled prime factors) 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 36 = LCM
