Impact
14. We do it strategically,
investing money where it
most makes a difference.
15. ›› We reduce the number of nuclear
weapons and nuclear materials.
›› We prevent the emergence of new
nuclear armed states.
›› We promote stability in regions of
conflict where nuclear weapons may
be used.
16. Reducing the World’s Largest Stockpiles
The United States and Russia still hold 95% of
the world’s nuclear weapons. Pushing reductions
forward in these two countries lessens the chance
of nuclear accidents and opens the door for other
nuclear armed states to enter the conversation
of reductions.
17. Preventing New Nuclear States
Preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed
nation and rolling back the North Korean nuclear
program are critical elements in our efforts to
stop further proliferation of nuclear weapons.
18. Promoting Stability in Regions with
Nuclear Weapons
Addressing the root causes of conflict between
India and Pakistan could prevent the first ever
regional nuclear war. Our work supports conflict
prevention in the field and also ensures the flow
of critical information to decision-makers in
Washington, DC.
20. Three Approaches to Investments
›› We provide venture investments and
seed money to new projects with
innovative approaches.
›› We make capacity building grants
to institutions proven to shape the
nuclear security agenda.
›› We organize and fund impact
campaigns around key policy targets.
21. Venture Investments
By identifying and funding individuals and
organizations with fresh, innovative perspectives
and different backgrounds, we help new ideas take
root and make our community more successful.
Notable grants
›› Funded an award winning advertising
campaign by American Values Network,
helping win the support of faith voters for the
New START treaty.
›› Gave seed funding to start a national security
desk at the Center for Public Integrity for the
investigation and reporting of fraud, waste and
abuse within the nuclear weapons complex.
22. Capacity Building
By investing and growing the capacity of
established individuals and organizations, we
ensure that experts remain committed to nuclear
weapons policy from the grassroots to grasstops.
Notable grants
›› Conceived to help existing grantees get
more media attention, Rethink Media is now
an essential resource for the whole nuclear
policy community.
›› The Arms Control Association uses its
stellar reputation, credibility and access to
policymakers to build political support for
sound nuclear policy.
23. Organize and Fund Impact Campaigns
Using our own expertise and tapping into the
networks we have built, we are able to organize
campaigns targeted at short-term policy goal that
will yield long-term payoffs.
Notable Achievements and Activities
›› Ensured passage of the New START treaty that
reduced deployed strategic nuclear weapons
between the U.S. and Russia to 1,550 from
2,200 each.
›› Converted talk of cutting the military budget
into a serious discussion of cuts to the nuclear
complex, potentially saving billions of tax-
payer dollars.
