 because she did not understand the digital
 revolution?
Now back to journalism

 Have a look at this graph from the Economist
Invest the profit in the future

 Convergence: break down the Chinese walls
 Use the advantage of having all media production
  from one newsroom for cross platform
  publishing
 Re use content
 Create special content for online: eye candy, more
  traffic to the site: coveritlive
 Cross reference to various platforms
Invest the profit in the future 2

 Digital story telling: combining the strong points of
  each medium
 Or tap into data journalism ; for example social
  network analysis
 Goal: not the gadgets but informing the public better
Back to the red light district

 The flipside is: the amateurs have understood the
 business too!
We: the media

 Former public; the former audience, because the
    public is talking back and have a printing press, TV
    station too! Look at this graph and this one
   They have blogs, mini blogging-Twitter, Facebook.
   And the public is doing reporting….use it! Not by just
    opening a Twitter or Facebook account
   Formalize it, build a community of citizen reporters:
    give a phone for mobile reporting and appoint a
    social media editor
   Grocott’s Mail a South African example
Where to go:

 The future is digital: Converge
 The public is talking back and open up the
  newsroom: Interactive
 Interesting stories: bottom up in stead of top down
 Eye candy: digital story telling
 Everybody is in principle a journalist: citizen
  reporting
