Explanatory notes
Alphabetization.
The Danish letters æ, ø, and å, are normally filed as the three last letters in the alphabet. In
this gazetteer, however, they are filed as ae, o, and a respectively.
The order of letters throughout each name is followed strictly:
Gåsefjord
G.B. Schley Fjord
Giesecke Isfjord
Coordinates.
For area features (e.g. islands, lakes, districts), the coordinates indicate the approximate
centre of the feature.
Coordinates are given in degrees ( º ) and minutes ( ′ ) (seconds ( ″ ) only in exceptional
cases) .
Municipalities.
The district and municipality names in which a place or feature lies is given, with the
exception of features not belonging to any specific municipality. For these features, the
region name is given.
Populated places.
Every present populated place is listed: towns, villages and settlements (e.g. sheep stations).
In addition, selected names of abandoned places are included.
Population figures.
Most population figures are 1 January 2015 estimates.
