Pegasus Agritech to ensure food security in the region: plans to
open new hydroponic farm in Oman
Dubai, UAE:13th
Aug2013– Food security in the Middle East is one of the biggest
problems for Gulf Coast Countries (GCC), where billions of dollars are
invested to acquire land outside of the region to have some control over
the food supply chain.
Although it is one of the world's richest regions in terms of oil wealth, the
humid climate, lack of arable land and water scarcity makes the region one
of the smallest producers of fresh produce in the world.
In 2012, GCC imported around 33 million tons of food, spending about $29
billion, and this is set to double by 2020. The GGC food market is therefore
an attractive investment for companies with advanced crop development
technologies.
Along these lines, today Pegasus Agritech announced the start of
construction of a commercial hydroponic farm in Muscat, Oman, to be
operation by September 2013. The 10,000 square meter facility will
produce fresh produce around the clock at a fraction of the cost of foreign
imports.
Pegasus Agritech is the largest operator of commercial hydroponic farms in
the Middle East - growing plants without soil. Using advanced hydroponic
techniques and shelf growing technology, it will produce 1000-1200 tons of
fresh produce a year on just 1 hectare of land.
That's about 30 times more produce than can be produced using traditional
agriculture in that space, using just 10% of the water. Hydroponic facilities
can also be sited on waste land.

2. This is the first announcement of a commercial project in the GCC,
something we are very proud of. Pegasus Agritech can grow lettuce
tomatoes, strawberries, basil, thyme, rocket and many other vegetables
utilizing hydroponics in giant automated temperature controlled
greenhouses.
For us, the main focus of the company is to protect the food security of the
GCC. With our technology, expertise and enough capital investment we
believe that one day in the very near future we can change the way these
countries manage there food supply chain, from an import based economy
to a production based economy.
The hydroponic farm site in Muscat is creating 100 local jobs in the
construction phase, and will create 40 jobs for operations, administration
and logistics.
