The Parable of the Mustard Seed (as exegeted by Obery M. Hendricks, Jr. in The
Universe Bends Toward Justice, p.119)

•No self-respecting cultivator of land in first-century Israel would purposely
sow a mustard seed because it is a noxious weed and it would overrun the
commercial crop.

•To sow the unwanted mustard seed would be to treat it as the equal of more
highly valued, traditionally planted crops.

•Purposely sowing the mustard seed in the midst of other plants
intentionally violates the law in Leviticus 19:19 (and no one would devote an
entire field to a weed !).

•Despite its tiny size, the mustard seed grows to a height of 4 feet, with 4-foot
branches, taller than the staple crop, wheat.

The mustard seed is like a weed with no commercial value, but it
offers something other cultivated plants do not: a home for “the birds
of the air”.

“Birds of the Air”
• those without fields of their own, unable to care for themselves

• a welcome place for the poor and the landless who _like birds_ are typically
never welcome in a cultivated field

•“Birds” are not welcome because every kernel they consume means less for
the cultivator, reducing profits and wealth

“..the portrayal of God’s kingdom as a tiny mustard seed is a metaphor
for the … inclusion of even the neediest in the largesse of God’s
kingdom on earth.” 8

What is a sustainable social enterprise that advances the Good News of Jesus Christ ?

opportunities for very low income individuals, while simultaneously
operating with reference to the financial bottom-line.”

Oikonomia social enterprises will advance the
Good News of Jesus Christ by:
•Creating access to food, water, clothing, health,
•Assisting the poor, and those in the criminal justice
system
•Creating access to abundance
•Making disciples

Oikonomia social enterprises will be sustainable
& have measurable results. They will:
•promote investment & create jobs
•benefit the environment
•lift people out of poverty
•generate sufficient revenue to sustain operations
•produce a financial surplus over the long-term (in
some cases)

There will be two categories of Oikonomia social
enterprises, guided by covenants:

Church Initiatives
•100% revenue to CCSH
•abide by Oikonomia principles
•compensation to team members

Independently Owned
•100% revenue to owners
•abide by Oikonomia principles
•pay a tithe of surplus to CCSH (10% or more)

Oikonomia social enterprises will:
•Consist of a minimum 0f 3 enterprise team members .
• No less than 1/3 of enterprise team members must be CCSH
members in good standing.

All OM enterprise team members must have:
• Daily access to a computer with internet access
•An email address
•A mobile phone

Study
1) Read 2 Chronicles 17:1-18:34. What does the text reveal about the structure and
economy of Israel and other nations when Jehoshaphat was king? By 12/25,
email to OM participants 3-4 sentences on your observations.
2) Purchase Starting from Zero with $0: Building Mission-Shaped Ministries on a
Shoestring by Becky Garrison. Be prepared to share on 12/27.

Recruit
1) Talk to 10 people about Oikonomia.
2) Bring at least one of the 10 people you talk with to the 12/27 meeting.

Survey
1) Visit at least 3 sites from the “Social Enterprise Examples” page.
2) Write 2 sentences on each site you visit and email to all OM participants before
12/25.

Build
1) If you get along well with the person you bring on 12/27, invite them to be on your
