  1. Presenter guidance: Use this slide to set the context for a conversation on “reimagining” through the lens of external research and insights.   Key points: Enhancing the customer experience was the top theme that emerged in this year’s research of top enterprise priorities across business and IT executive audiences. This is considered a key growth strategy, which is increasingly replacing cost cutting as a strategic focus as economies improve. The prevalent use of connected mobile technology in the world has changed customer expectations dramatically. This in turn is both forcing companies to provide the experiences people expect and is providing the opportunity to compete in new and different ways. Transforming to a digital business is now considered a requirement for virtually every enterprise. Much more than simply digitizing traditional processes, businesses are rethinking products, services and even entire business models in a mobile-first, cloud-first, all-digital world. For example, manufacturers are undergoing a major shift from an asset-centric world where they don’t often know who their customers are to one in which they have direct relationships with customers and are able to differentiate their company by providing rich, value-added services. While the majority of uses of big data today are incremental to current business practices, Gartner has observed that some organizations are engaging in game-changing activities: 42% are developing new products and business models, and 23% are monetizing information directly. (Source: Kart, Lisa, Nick Heudecker, and Frank Buytendijk. Survey analysis: big data adoption in 2013 shows substance behind the hype. Gartner, Inc. September 12, 2013. ) Becoming more responsive is a natural outcome for companies that design customer-first products and processes and effectively transform into a digital business. As the flow of information increases, companies can gain competitive advantages by shifting focus from efficiency to their ability to learn and respond rapidly to new information. Realizing that adaptability and iteration speed are paramount is forcing leaders to fundamentally rethink corporate structures and information systems. Sources for infographic data points: “Engaged employees and satisfied customers dominate thinking of CEOs in 2014.” CEO Challenge 2014. The Conference Board. January 9, 2014. “Outperforming enterprises are 54 percent more likely than underperforming enterprises to collaborate extensively with their Customers” The Customer-activated Enterprise: Insights from the IBM Global C-suite Study. IBM. March 2014. “The top priorities facing specific business functions or departments for 2014 are similar, but include some subtle differences: enhancing the customer experience (75%); deploying new strategies or initiatives (72%); successfully communicating company strategy (71%); growing manager skills (70%).” New Study Uncovers Top Business Challenges and Priorities for Executives in 2014. Root Inc. and Kelton Global. February 6, 2014. “The emergence of social, mobile and digital networks has played a big part in democratizing the relationship between organizations and their customers. It’s also forcing them to rethink how they work. Some 60 percent of CxOs now look to partners who will have an equal hand in creating business value. And almost half are sourcing innovation from the outside.” The Customer-activated Enterprise: Insights from the IBM Global C-suite Study. IBM. March 2014. “As the digital infuses the physical, and vice versa, organizations are transforming the customer experience. Nearly seven in ten CxOs recognize the new imperative — a shift to social and digital interaction. Over half expect to meet an even more difficult demand: understanding and engaging the customer as an individual rather than as a category or market segment” The Customer-activated Enterprise: Insights from the IBM Global C-suite Study. IBM. March 2014. “CIOs also report that a quarter [27%] of 2014 IT spending will happen outside the IT budget.” Taming the digital dragon: the 2014 CIO agenda: insights from the 2014 Gartner CIO agenda report. Gartner, Inc. 2014. “But individual digital leaders are not enough – all business leaders must become digital leaders. The 2014 CIO Survey found that the CEO's digital savvy is one of the best indicators of IT and business performance.” Aron, Dave, and Graham P. Walker. Taming the digital dragon: the 2014 CIO agenda. Gartner, Inc. December 31, 2013. “79 percent of C-level executives believe they make better and faster tech decisions than their IT departments.” Global Survey: What’s creating tension between IT and business leaders? Avanade. April 2014. “70% of CIOs Will Increase Enterprise Exposure to Risk to Dramatically Reduce IT Costs and Accelerate Business Agility Through Increased Cloud Adoption.” Dr. Ron Babin and Fred Magee. Worldwide CIO Agenda 2014 Top 10 Predictions. IDC. December 2013. "2014 will be a year of dual goals: responding to ongoing needs for efficiency and growth, but also shifting to exploit a fundamentally different digital paradigm. Ignoring either of these is not an option.” Gartner Executive Programs survey of more than 2,300 CIOs reveals many are unprepared for digitalization: the third era of enterprise IT. Gartner, Inc. 4. Presenter guidance: Talk about your own experience in choosing the devices that you use and the guidance available. What factors influenced your decisions? Key points: BYOD is really about letting our users choose their devices, regardless of whether the company purchases it or the employee or vendor brings their own device into the workplace. According to Forrester Research, 67 percent of the people who use a smartphone for work and 70 percent of the people who use a tablet for work are choosing the devices themselves. This is undeniably what employees want and expect today. Furthermore, they predict that by 2017, there will be 905 million tablets worldwide being used for both work and home. When it comes to PCs, at Microsoft we’ve moved from a “standards” list that restricts options to a “recommendations” list that will give users the best device experience possible while maximizing their productivity. It’s all about giving our employees choice in the devices that they will use to get their jobs done, rather than controlling the hardware—though they do need to purchase their business PCs and peripherals through our approved procurement channel. Through our internal Microsoft IT portal, we help them to make informed choices by providing: A guide to minimum recommended hardware specifications for different types of devices (for example, devices with a TPM chip to make remote connections to the corporate network easier). At-a-glance comparisons of different devices, as well as guidance on the differences between Windows 8 certified and Windows 7 logo devices (for example, differences in security and boot times). A list of all current IT standard options and specifications. Guidance on approved channels for purchasing devices with pre-negotiated corporate pricing. When it comes to smartphones and other personal mobile devices, our employees purchase whatever device they want to use and then expense it back to the business. We encourage employees to use Windows Phone, as it provides the broadest possible access to corporate resources and built-in capabilities that make it easier for them to stay productive on the go. For example, it includes the same integrated mail and calendar as Outlook on PCs; it comes with Office Mobile preinstalled, letting them view, edit, and comment on Office documents; and it provides easy access to SharePoint sites. Although we encourage our employees to use Windows Phone for the best possible productivity experience, we don’t limit them—in fact, Microsoft IT supports thousands of non-Windows mobile devices today. What they can access from personal devices is driven by the device’s capabilities (for example, Lync is supported on Windows Phone, iOS and Android devices, though only Windows Phone devices enable them to join Lync meetings with one click from Outlook). 5. Presenter guidance: Talk about how much easier it has become to find and install apps with Windows 8 and (if applicable) how you use personal devices in the workplace. Key points: While we don’t prescribe what devices a user can use for work, we do require a degree of control over those devices. For example, before a user can access corporate apps or information using a personal device, we require them to first enroll their device and accept a minimum level of management. Phones accessing corporate email are required to be secured with a PIN and users agree to allow our IT department to remotely wipe the device should it be lost or stolen. Similarly, we require personal PCs and tablets to enroll before being able to install corporate apps. This approach works very well for us. By managing policies that are enforced at the device level, we are able to secure intellectual property while also gaining visibility into what devices our users are using to access corporate information. With the introduction of Windows 8, we’ve delivered the Windows Intune Company Portal app that helps simplify application deployment for IT departments and installation for users. Apps can be installed on both corporate and personal machines without a connection to the corporate network. At Microsoft, we use the Company Portal to make more than 1,800 apps available to users through one easy-to-browse catalog, including the Windows 8.1 Enterprise upgrade, line-of-business apps and corporate productivity apps. Each month, we see approximately 30,000 application installations and availability of the service has been >99 percent. At Microsoft, we’ve invested in building apps that package streams of content and functionality optimized for specific roles and use cases. For example, our Enterprise Insider app shares thought leadership content from across to company for our field sales and marketing organization. We also provide the GearUp app to this same audience, providing a quick reference to all things about every product we sell, including value propositions, competitive differentiation, and more. Our Campus Experience app provides rich information for employees and vendors, such as campus and building maps, that isn’t generally available on the web. Our MS Expense app enables travelling employees to instantly track expenses on the go, helping dramatically raise compliance with completing expense reports on time. At home, at work, on-the-go—our BYOD strategy is to enable people to be productive wherever they are.
