1. Christmas Break
Independent Reading Assignment
Due January 2, 2014
Meet Stanley...Stanley is a perfectly normal young man until one morning he wakes up
flat as a pancake! Flat Stanley, His Original Adventure, will take us on an adventure.
Part 1 (Classroom Activity): Flat Stanley Figure. Students will create their very own
Flat Stanley to bring home over Christmas Break!
Part 2 (Independent Activity): Read the Story. Over Christmas break, students must
read the story, Flat Stanley: His Original Adventures. Copies have been provided for
each student and must be returned to school on January 2, 2014. Comprehension
Assessment will be given after the break.
Part 3 (Independent Activity): Journal. Over Christmas break, students will “hang”
with Flat Stanley. Let Flat Stanley accompany your child wherever he/she goes during
Christmas Break. If possible, take pictures of your child with his/her Flat Stanley at
various places. Each entry must contain date and 3-5 sentences minimum describing
the day’s activities. A minimum of six (6) entries must be completed. Digital pictures
may be sent to acspatriciabernstein@gmail.com for posting on our website and
creation of our 3rd Grade Flat Stanley Scrapbook.
Part 4 (Independent Activity): Presentation. Using the journal entries, students will
create a 2-3 minute presentation (summation) of Flat Stanley’s Vacation with their
family. Students are NOT to read from their journal. They are to summarize the
activities. Use of index cards is strongly encouraged. Students must practice and
rehearse their presentation.
