Chapter 2 - Lesson 3: How Do Fish, Frogs, and
                Mammals Grow?
                    Study Guide
Vocabulary:
1. amphibian - an animal with a backbone that
lives part of
its life cycle in water and pat on land.
2. gills - the parts of fish and tadpoles that are
used to take
in oxygen from water.
3. tadpole - a very young frog or toad.
Main Ideas:
· Frogs are amphibians. Most amphibians live part of
their lives in
water and part on land.
· The life cycle of a frog has the following stages: egg,
young
tadpole, older tadpole, adult frog.
· A mammal is characterized by fur or hair and milk-
producing
mammary glands. Mammals also have a backbone and
lungs.
· Mammal babies stay with one or both of their parents
for a period of
time that ranges from a few months to many years.
· Mammal babies begin as eggs.
· Different kinds of mammals have different life cycles.
The typical
mammal life cycle includes egg, embryo, baby, young
animal and
adult.
Chapter 2 - Lesson 3: How Do Fish, Frogs, and
                Mammals Grow?
                  QUICK QUIZ #1
1. What are amphibians?
2. How is a tadpole like a fish?
H.O.T. Put the following stages in the life cycle of
a frog into the correct sequence: adult, older
tadpole, egg, young tadpole.
Chapter 2 - Lesson 3: How Do Fish, Frogs, and
                Mammals Grow?
                Raise Questions
1. Which animals in this chapter have a
backbone?
H.O.T. Which characteristics of mammals do dogs
have?
Chapter 2 - Lesson 3: How Do Fish, Frogs, and
                Mammals Grow?
                QUICK QUIZ #2
1. What is a mammal?
2. Are all mammals covered with fur?
H.O.T. Apply your knowledge of mammals to list
ten examples of mammals.
Chapter 2 - Lesson 3: How Do Fish, Frogs, and
                Mammals Grow?
                Raise Questions
1. Where do mammal embryos usually grow?

2. What happens to mammal babies after they are
born?
H.O.T. What do all adult animals have in
common?
Chapter 2 - Lesson 3: How Do Fish, Frogs, and
                Mammals Grow?
                     Page A47
1. How is the life cycle of a fish different from the
life cycle of a frog?
2. What are the stages in the mammal life cycle?
3. Sequencing - use what you know about life
cycles of frogs to put these steps in the correct
order: breathe with gills; breathe with lungs;
hatch from eggs.
