An Introduction to Entebbe
     and Gulu, Uganda
Course #1: Complex Emergencies and
 the Management of Refugees and
             Migrants
• This course will examine migration, including
  forced migration, in Uganda and the broader East
  African region
• Based on data provided by UNHCR, Uganda is
  hosting more than 150,000 refugees and asylum-
  seekers from Burundi, the DRC, Eritrea, Ethiopia,
  Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan
• While an estimated 40,000 urban refugees live
  mostly in Kampala, the majority of the forced
  migrants are spread across eight settlements in
  the north and southwest of Uganda
Course #1: Complex Emergencies and
  the Management of Refugees and
           Migrants (cont.)
• After a general introduction to migration in the Great
  Lakes Region, the course will visit international
  organizations (including UNHCR and/or IOM) and local
  and international NGOs involved in supporting migrants
  in Uganda
• After a few days in Entebbe/Kampala, we will relocate
  to Gulu in Northern Uganda, an area formerly
  controlled by the Lord's Resistance Army and a center
  for resettlement and other post-conflict activities
Field Research
• Course #1: Forced Migration
  – As part of the course work and based on materials
    developed by the Sphere Project, the students will
    work in groups on case studies examining the
    management of refugees and migrants in Gulu
  – This case study exercise will involve the collection
    of interview and other field data in collaboration
    with the University of Gulu
  – A trip to Murchison Falls National Park is planned
    on the way to/from Gulu

Course Logistics
• Teaching:                                   Katomi Kingdom, Entebbe
  – Lectures, incl. guest speakers (mostly in the mornings)
  – Site visits/field trips, and group work (mostly
    afternoons, sometimes all day)
• Housing and Meals:
  – Shared rooms (2 students per room) in Entebbe,
    single or shared rooms in Gulu
  – Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, and two coffee
    breaks
 (Note: Do not expect luxury, East Africa is expensive and most
 hotels are not up to Western standards)
