This is an early version of a presentation I'm preparing for business owners and executives. Because of the audience this was intended for, the presentation features more on the benefits of open source CMS systems such as Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal. Towards the end there is also a rant about Australia's Yellow Pages operator, Sensis and a quick look at some of the free online marketing tools.

I’ll come back to hosting later. Huge support base. No shortage of WP supporters Simple languages, if you or a staff member can figure out basic HTML then PHP is a doddle Worpress doesn’t deal well with very high traffic sites with many users and features like user forums and photo galleries

A TPG data centre was flooded out in Melbourne last year because it’s in a basement: 101 stuff, these guys aren’t serious. - Consultants Scope the project with the client: What exactly do they want? Opportunity for Marketing Angels as PMs managing contractors and consultants Websites are increasingly part of the business process. Management must be fully engaged with the process; just passing it off as an IT or marketing function will cause problems Finding consultants Google is your friend Check reference sites Have a look at their comments on web sites Follow up references with active calls Few people part on good terms with web designers, this is because of scope problems particularly on the client side Project management is the real skill If a contract is slipping; get the contractor and client in the room Specify deliverables, timelines and payment schedules tied to project milestones
