 Question: Is surgery with the da Vinci system better
than traditional surgery?
 Dr. Patrick Muffley: The da Vinci system does offer
certain advantages, namely smaller incisions, a
reduced risk of infection, shorter hospitals
stays, and more rapid recovery times. The system’s
robotic camera also provides doctors with a three-
dimensional view of the surgery site. Older
systems, like laparoscopy, are equipped with two-
dimensional cameras.

 Q: Who is a candidate for da Vinci surgery?
 Dr. Muffley: Most patients, adults and children
alike, can be considered for the surgery.
However, those who are overweight or those who
smoke may experience more discomfort than
others, and should discuss their health in greater
detail with a doctor.

and Drug Administration?
 Dr. Muffley: Yes, the FDA has approved the
technology for use in a range of
procedures, including gynecologic laparoscopic
surgeries and general laparoscopic surgeries.
