A nonpartisan organization established in 2007, The
Common Good is based in Washington, D.C. It aims
to empower and educate its members on issues of
public importance.
3. Among its goals, the organization strives to promote
the free exchange of ideas, to encourage tolerance
for differing points of view, and to cultivate reasoned
national debate. To achieve its goals, The Common
Good regularly welcomes guest speakers; on July 15,
2014, it hosted Jill Abramson, who gave a lecture on
the current state of political journalism.
Ms. Abramson, journalist, educator, and author of
three books, was the first woman to serve in the
positions of managing editor and executive editor of
The New York Times. Prior to her time there, she
served as an investigative reporter focused on politics
and money at The Wall Street Journal.
4. Currently, she serves as a visiting lecturer
in the Department of English at Harvard
University.
