Physical Barriers
• Noise – Unwanted Sounds/Disturbances
created by physical things
• Distance – if the Sender/Receiver are far away
from each others, communication is not clear.

Language Barriers:
- Different Languages: If people have different languages, it is
difficult to have proper communication.
- Semantic Barriers – It means Meaning related barriers.
Sometimes, we do not get the meaning clearly, and that
brings a semantic barriers.

Psychological Barriers:
- Preoccupations: When someone has fixed thoughts in advance and does not agree to
change them; things only by what he already believes, we call it preoccupations
- Bias: favouring one and neglecting the other is also a barriers in communication
- Hurried Judgements/Premature Evaluation: Sometimes the communicator does not
give time and makes a premature/quick judgement

Organisational Barriers:
- Less facilities also create barriers in communication at office
or workplace.
- Organisational Set up: If there is a complex set up in the
organization where people can not communicate freely, it
also becomes a barriers in communication.

Cultural Barrier:
- Ethnocentrism - Ethnicity – Cultural Identity
Want to FORCE others to Follow YOUR CULTURE – then it is –
ETHNOCENTRISM
- Different Rituals: When we have different rituals in 2 communities, it
is sometimes difficult to communicate well without proper
understanding between people

Formal Communication
is WITH FORMALITIES.
We take care of rules,
codes and hierarchical
structure as well.
• INFORMAL IS wiTHouT FormALITIEs – We can
avoid the Official Process and Protocols in the
‘Informal’ but we cannot be careless or casual. It
is done in a relaxed manner.
• Informal is known as > Grapevine
Communication can be described as a
casual and unofficial communication system
within the organization.

Communication that travels from Top to Bottom or Bottom to Top in an
Organisation comes under this category.
We see thy flow in offices and institutions where we follow the ways to
communicate.
