2. WHAT IS ALEXITHYMIA?
Alexithymia (literally “no word for emotion”) is a subclinical
condition associated with difficulty identifying feelings,
difficulty describing feelings, and an externally oriented
thinking style that seems to result from the first two factors.
3. ASSOCIATIONS
Alexithymia is associated with a wide array of mental health
outcomes that are often associated with various maladaptive
behaviours, as well as substance abuse and employment challenges.
Because alexithymia is not a recognized clinical condition, it is often
overlooked in many intervention programs and thus goes
unacknowledged.
4. INTERVENTION POTENTIAL
Alexithymia comes in two forms:
Primary alexithymia is associated with early onset and deep
negative beliefs about emotional experiences. This form is difficult
to treat.
Secondary alexithymia is associated with traumatic and stressful
experiences and results from a desire to avoid unpleasant
emotions. This form is easier to treat.
It is possible to “stealth” programming that addresses alexithymia
into other interventions (e.g., economic empow-erment, literacy,
wellness). Doing so can have beneficial effects on program
outcomes.
