Barak Perlman, ConteXtream - SFC (Service Function Chaining) Using Openstack and SDN, OpenStack Israel 2015

Synopsis We will start with MPLS 101 and then look into MPLS related OpenFlow actions. In the second half we will delve into RouteFlow architecture and extend it to enable Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) and MPLS routing. We will conclude with a mini-net based test bed switching traffic using MPLS labels instead of IP addresses. This will be a hands on workshop. VM Images for Virtual Box will be provided. Attendees are expected to bring their laptops loaded with Virtual Box. About Vikram Dham Vikram is the CTO and co-founder of Kamboi Technologies, LLC where he advises networking companies, switch vendors and early adopters on SDN technology and distributed software development. Also, he is the founder of Bay Area Network Virtualization (BANV) meet-up group, that brings together technologists in the SDN/NFV/NV domain for technical talks, workshops and creates a truly "open" platform for sharing knowledge. He has used SDN technologies for building software related to traffic engineering, security and routing. In the past, he was the Principal Engineer at Slingbox where he architected & built the distributed networking software for peer to peer connectivity of millions of end points. He holds MS degree in EE with a specialization in Computer Networks from Virginia Tech and has worked on research projects with companies like ECI Telecom, Raytheon and Avaya Research Labs.

In this talk, we will discuss how L4-L7 devices can integrate in various SDN architectures, discuss benefits and some of the challenges that such integration represents. We will also talk about how SDN and NFV relate, and what are the different challenges to successfully deploy L4-L7 devices as Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) or provide such services to the NFV Infrastructure (VIM). Bio Youcef Laribi is a Principal Architect in the Delivery Networks BU at Citrix. He is responsible for driving the integration projects of the NetScaler ADC product with several Cloud, SDN and Automation environments including OpenStack, CloudStack, VMware NSX and Cisco ACI. He is also the Citrix representative on the OpenDaylight Technical Steering Committee. His background is mainly in Operating Systems and Distributed Systems, and he worked on several middleware technologies from DCE and CORBA in the early days, to J2EE and .NET to SOA and micro-services today. Youcef speaks 4 languages and holds a PhD and an MSc in Computer Science from the French INPG Institute in Grenoble, France.

About Louis Fourie Louis Fourie is currently a senior staff engineer working on network virtualization, cloud services, and SDN technologies at Huawei Technology, USA. Louis is an active contributor to the service chaining work in several organizations including OpenStack, ONF, ETSI NFV, IETF, and OPNFV. Louis previously worked at Cisco on several computer networking, voice and data communications products, and is the holder of several patents.

OPNFV VIM integrates control and management components from upstream projects such as openstack, ONOS, ODL, etc. While huge success has been achieved in OPNFV for integration, automated build and deployment, the performance of VIM for controlling and managing virtual network has received little attention. This presentation is to address the VIM performance related to the network part of the infrastructure. Based on a Telco use case, we define performance metrics for SDN controller, northbound communication channels, and network provisioning. ONOSFW and OpenStack are two components for VIM. Test data is collected and analyzed for performance evaluation and suggestions for future improvements. China Unicom, ON.LAB and Huawei jointly define the use case and methodology, do analysis, and produce results.

We are working on KVM enhancements for NFV as a collaborative development project in OPNFV, focusing on three key features: minimal Interrupt latency variation, inter-VM (Virtual Machine) communication, and fast live migration. In this presentation, we introduce and provide an update on the project, and how we plan to work with the upstream KVM project. Minimal Interrupt latency variation is required for data plane VNFs to achieve deterministic execution. We present an update, demonstrating how hardware and software enhancements can help when reducing latency variations. We evaluate and compare the options for inter-VM communication (e.g. ivshmem, vhost user, VMFUNC, etc.) in terms of performance, interface/API, usability/programing model, security, and maintenance. These events can be used to detect abnormal activity and possible security incidents, as well as providing an audit trail of activity. When creating a new Microservice you typically need to add a lot of boilerplate to the code, such as logging, metrics, authentication, SSL, secrets/credentials, etc... All this ends up overshadowing the actual logic of the service itself and results in a lot of dependencies and code. Because of this, we at Soluto created a template for the boilerplate, which worked great... Until we had to upgrade one of the dependencies which resulted in huge effort of code upgrades and deployment across each and every service that uses the template. And that’s besides the fact we needed to make a separate template for each language we used (and over the years, the number of programming languages we use at production increased dramatically). We needed a way to simplify all this. We wanted to get rid of the boilerplate while maintaining the functions listed above. So we decided to delegate the entire responsibility to the Kubernetes infrastructure. In this lecture, I will do a live coding session and show you how to remove the boilerplate from your code and move it to the infrastructure, and discuss the benefits and limitations of this approach.

Machine Learning is no doubt the hottest trend in IT nowadays. Deep Neural Network (DNN), a subfield of Machine Learning with mode of operation loosely inspired by the brain, allows us to solve complex problems such as image recognition that has been very difficult to solve using standard programming paradigms. DNN concepts are not new. However, and until recently, applying them in practice could not be realized due to their high computational demands. With the recent development in parallel computing, especially around GPU acceleration and high speed and efficient networking, DNN has become a reality in modern data centers. In this talk we will describe the system requirements to effectively run a machine learning cluster with popular frameworks such as TensorFlow. We will discuss how such a system can be deployed in an OpenStack-based cloud without compromises, enjoying high-performance DNN programming paradigm as well as the benefits of cloud and software-defined data centers.
