"What tech do students of today need to be aware of and how can they prepare to be entrepreneurs and business leaders of tomorrow?"
Keran was asked to speak to the University of Auckland as part of Tech Week NZ on exactly this topic. You can watch the video of this talk here https://thefuturistproject.com/2018/05/23/visions-of-future-success/
1994 - hypercard, I challenged and said HTML? They said YES
I learned that the OUTCOME is the important part
Multiple failed startups - but there are lessons in each one - I thought my path to success was 100% startup world … turns out it doesn’t need to beCorporate - you can be the startup inside - Yellow/Finda story - painting the wall
You can innovate ANYWHERE you are - find the passion MYOB (passion outside the core space - impacting lives)
So many things we could talk about - the future is AMAZING
But tonight I’m going to touch on 9 key areas that will impact Kiwi businesses over the next 2 to 5 years
We are only at the beginning of AI
Compute power right now has us in the Narrow Intelligence space - that is AI that is REALLY good at ONE thing - eg Driving a car (NOW) - on par with a bug/mouse
Next is General Intelligence - this is the ability to task shift (emerging … coming strong over next 18-36 months) - take learning from one area, apply it to another, on par with a human adult
Finally there is SUPER Intelligence - beyond human knowledge and IQ ….
Impact to business - computers making decisions for us. We’re already seeing AI impacting the world of business advisory, trend analysis … and coupled with Machine Learning & Big Data & Voice interfaces and we’re seeing things like the Google Duplex demo
Notes here about Empathy …
iPhone to Glasses
Right now it’s a $7billion industry (gaming centric)
20250 it’ll be an $80 Billion industry (medical, engineering and Information centric)
Notes here about Empathy …

Sensors everywhere
75 Billion … that doesn’t include the 4.3 billion mobile phones
By 2020... There will be 30B Connected devices Individuals will generate 1.5GB of data per day Smart homes will generate 50GB of data per day Autonomous vehicles will generate 5TB of data per day Smart buildings will generate 150GB of data per day
Here’s an example ….
I could go for EVER about robots …. invertRobotics - it’s not about the robot it’s about the solution, the customer DOES NOT CARE how!
From TEENY TINY ones that do micro surgery, to amazing ones that move warehouses, robotics are everywhere
They are also super future but not future at all
72% of businesses will drop passwords by 2025
I use biometrics everywhere now … 1Password helps with this
China scoring people
Refugee camp in Jordan using Biometrics and the blockchain - for ID and payments
Massive reduction in costs of supply chain
From printing HOMES, to SKIN, to parts - on earth, in space
IMPACT - generating additional $550million by 2025
Manipulation at a genetic level
Changing food - NZ is one of the leaders here “Pea protein into CHICKEN!”
Soylent - Impossible foods
NZ Based NAVCoin
Making POS payments easy
Interchange between various currencies
Leading the world in Point of sale
NZ adoption, low, ROME & Europe - huge
Commercial reality within 5yrs - Google Quantum research
MS - already have computers and APIs to Quantum machines you can start to explore
It’s not about the technology - we get hung up on tech
Someone asked me “What tech stack do you recommend for preparing for tomorrow” - if you are asking that then you are asking the wrong thing - what is the outcome and hwat tool do I have that can get me there
Today more than ever the technology is here - it’s what will you do with it
If you think the future is all about the tech - you are 100% right and 100% wrong
The most delightful thing about the future is when tech is just there and OUT OF THE WAY
Be EVER curious
Explore the new, explore what these things mean
In business you should ALWAYS be asking “Does this help MY customers?” or “Does this help MY business?” or “Does this enable someone ELSE to disrupt me?”
Get Stuff Done
Don’t over think it
Try, try and try again
Done is better than Perfect
If you aren’t getting on and doing stuff, your competitors will be
Don’t fear the future
Will robots take our jobs - maybe, maybe not… first they will augment our jobs, this future will CREATE new jobs
Robots & AI will take the mundane parts
Future jobs will be more creative, problem solving, emotive and less about the doing & repetitive nature of work
If you are the smartest person in the room (or on the team) you are in the wrong room!
Doing things alone wont get you far … very few people succeed on their own! You need to find a team - Steve Jobs had a team, Jack Ma had 7 core team who worked with him, Jeff Bezos credits those around him for the KEY points in Amazons growth … (clarify the Jack Ma - 7 people)
A players will go the extra mile …. Let me embarrass someone in the room who is an A player - Jerry …..
If I leave you with one thing that will set you up for future success, in business, in life … it’s this
Technology is an enabler
MYOB success = personal
Define your own success
Be deliberate in that definition of success
Be deliberate in what it is you are going after
Be adaptable in the way you get there
Seek mentoring on the way through
Leverage the hell out of Tech (no emotion/feelings)
To get THAT outcome.
