The document tells a story about a man who listened to Buddha's teachings for a month but did not see any changes in his life. When he asked Buddha about this, Buddha explained that merely listening is not enough - one must practice the teachings by applying them to their life. Buddha used the analogy of traveling to illustrate that just as one cannot reach a destination by sitting, one cannot experience positive changes by only listening without practicing the teachings. The man realized he needed to practice what Buddha taught to see improvements in his character and happiness. He committed to following the path, and soon his life did change for the better.
2. 2
Buddha used to give discourses daily to his followers, people from
far and wide.
Many people used to come to listen to his discourses.
Buddha used to teach the people to live life with simplicity,
keeping themselves away from greed, lust, craving, attachment,
jealousy, anger, ill will, hatred, pride, conceit and ego.
3. 3
There was a man who used to come every day to listen to the
discourses of Gautama Buddha. He would listen very carefully to every
word of Buddha and then return home when the discourse was over.
For about a month he continued to come to listen to the discourses of
Buddha.
One day after the discourse was over he stayed behind after everyone
had left.
4. 4
He went to Buddha and said, “Oh Lord I want to ask you something.”
“Ask,” said Buddha.
The man said, “Lord I have been listening very carefully to your
teachings every day for a month. I remember everything you said
but those teachings are not having an effect in my life. I am not
finding any change in my life.
5. 5
I am starting to wonder if there is something wrong which I lack and if not
so then why is it your teachings are not having any effect on my life.
Buddha asked, “My friend where do you live?
The man replied, “Lord, I live in Shravasti.”
Buddha asked, “How far is Shravasti from here?”
The man said, “Lord, it is four miles away from here.
Then Buddha asked, “How do you come here from Shravasti?”
6. 6
The man said, “Lord, I come here sometimes by walking, sometimes by a
horse cart and sometimes by a bullock cart.”
Buddha said, “Well tell me whether you will reach Shravasti by sitting
here.”
The man said, “Lord, how is this possible? How can I reach Shravasti by
just sitting here? I have to walk to get there and if not by walking then I
would need a means such as a bullock cart or a horse cart to reach there.
7. 7
“You are right,” said Buddha. Then Buddha continued, “One has to walk to
reach the destination. The destination cannot be reached without moving.
Similarly to bring good things into one’s life one has to be diligent to follow
the proper ways and acting upon them. Otherwise, how can one get the
good things? Those good things cannot come into your life just by
listening and not doing anything.
8. 8
One also has to behave accordingly, to improve his character and conduct.
Apply My teachings in your life earnestly and with diligence.
Follow the path shown by Me patiently and mindfully. Only then you will
see a positive change in your life.”
Listening to these words from Gautama Buddha, the man understood the
words of Buddha. He was determined now to follow and practice the
Buddha's Teachings. And he did. Before long, his life changed – he became
more happy, peaceful and wise.
