Where is Haiti?
Before the earthquake…
• It was one of the poorest countries in the
Western hemisphere (80% poverty)

• Over the years Haiti has had many political
and economical problems
• Under-18s make up almost half of Haiti's 10million population

GNI per capita is the dollar value of a country’s final income in a
year, divided by its population.
It reflects the average income of a country’s citizens.
On January 12th an earthquake of
7.0 magnitute hit Haiti
It is estimated that over 200,000 people
have died because of the earthquake
Problems
caused by
the
earthquake...
Due to the high number of deaths, many
bodies were left on the streets and later had
to be put in mass graves
The bodies increased the risk of
disease
People who had nothing have been left with even
less
Medical
help

• Many hospitals destroyed
• People are dying
because the hospitals
don’t have equipment
Amputations

Hundreds of amputations are being carried out without the proper equpiment
or sterile conditions
Two year old Redjeson was pulled out of the rubble alive
Haiti´s
Children
•Under-18s make up almost half of
Haiti's 10-million population
•The country already had the highest rate of
infant and child mortality in the Western hemisphere,
•Around 19,000 children with HIV/Aids and few drugs to treat
them.
“They are sleeping on their own, trying to cope with the trauma
of seeing dead bodies, and will have no idea where to go for
help”
The situation now in Haiti
• Many people are living in camps, for
example there are 25,000 people living on
a golf course
• Security has
been a major
problem
Rainy
season

Increases
risk of
Malaria

Putting their
country back
together – but with
what resources?

What will the future be
like for Haiti?

A
generation
of amputees

Problems with rehabilitation

orphans
At least 200,000 Haitians have lost at least one
limb
Why should we help?
The survivors of the earthquake
need our help and need money for:
food

water

shelter

How many of these things do we
take for granted?

What if this happened in Spain?

Charities helping Haiti have had some
success stories……
What can we do?
For the past few weeks at
Rafecas we have been trying to
raise money for Haiti.
By taking part and donating
money you can help charities that
are providing food and shelter.

This week´s task is “cent
wars”….
-Fill everyone else´s bottle but
leave your own empty
