Using  Vocabulary building Workbook  for English upgrading, employment training, as well as everyday use of the English language. Integrating multiple LES tools into program for adult learners who are being re-trained to either re-join the work force, or to move forward and begin at a post-secondary institution .
Steps for using Tools Identify Audience/Target Group Who will I use this tools with? (e.g. clients, employees, students) Identify Objective What is my goal/purpose in using these tools?  (e.g. help prepare clients for employment) Identify Need What are the particular needs of my clients/students/employees? (e.g. improve oral communication skills Select Applicable Tool(s) What tools are most relevant in addressing the needs of my clients/students/employees? Create Plan of Action & Monitor Results How will I administer these tools ? (e.g. one-on-one tutoring, group workshop, classroom) How will I evaluate their effectiveness (e.g. pre and post assessment)

NOTE ABOUT TOOLS OLES Tools developed by ES Research Project (ESRP, mentioned before)- over 3000 stakeholders were interviewed- employers, academic institutions, practitioners, to determine skills needed for various professions. The ES methodology adapted scales from Int’l Adult Literacy Skills Survey (IALSS) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) however, the tools are not directly aligned to CLB levels but the Canadian Centre for Language Benchmarks is developing a comparative frameworks to relate the CLB to ES. The ES methodology is presently being updated to reflect new skills.

Tool Kit VOCAB Building Workbook (photo copies)- lessons and vocabulary commonly used in Canadian workplace ORAL COMMUNICATION DVD- 2 segments 1) job interview, cultural norms, expectations of Canadian employees 2) Workplace conflict scenarios, people working in a restaurant resolving conflicts

  5. ES for Success as a Carpenter- provides workplace examples of how a Carpenter would use 9 ES e.g for the ES of READING - read project specifications to understand what is required. Accounting and Related Clerk (not in kits, all on-line) Shows how an Accountant would use the 9ES and assigns a complexity level for each ES READING TEXT (if you click…#1-3 is complexity level) read correspondence to determine if some accounting activity is required, such as issuing a cheque. (1) , (daily) read internal memos about changes in policy, procedures or personnel. (1) , (weekly) read letters from suppliers or customers which reconcile accounts, outline payments or request information. (2) read government bulletins on topics related to accounting, such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST). (2) read research reports and contracts to locate financial information.   8. Examples of OLES projects to illustrate how a LES approach/OLES tools can be tailored to various learner levels Winnipeg - low CLB, project develops ES required for entry level workplaces. Practical/ work related activities that incorporate ES. e.g CLB 1 for ES Doc Use- read census, compare prices at grocery store, read a medicine label. BVC- foreign trained/educated professionals that are high in certain ES but low in others i.e SOFT SKILLS (Oral Com/ Workplace language, Working with others/ Team Work, workplace culture etc.) NOTE - A lot of OLES tools/ project work is geared towards learners with low/ medium-literacy (LINC/CLB 1-4) focusing on level 2/3 (low on verge of medium) HOWEVER, tools can be used with higher level learners e.g. Foreign professionals are very high in some ES such as numeracy, document use, but low in others, workplace oral communication, working with others.

The class specializes, Workplace Communication Skills . SITAL is integrating Vocabulary Building Workbook into training programs to improve the vocabulary skills and build the essential skills of newcomers to Canada Ottawa LINC Class Using LES tools to inform newcomers to Canada of ES to support their employment
