Canadian Experience
Our communications tools and communication strategies have had in common three main principles, principles we apply to any communication piece.REFLECTION to the ACTIONHaving the first-hand experience, valuable analysis: the fact or living the immigration experience gives many elements to understand newcomer reality.Valuing the analysis, proposing changes: organizing experiences, community life in Canada, social movements.Voicing priorities, shaping their environment:Effective actions grounded in lived realities.Being proactive : being part of the solution and countering negative myths and messages about newcomers to CanadaSharing PAR findings: community forums, speaking with media, organizing workshops.Leading community-based coalitions: Latin American Civic Participation Campaign in the North West area of Toronto (16 organizations and community groups)INDIVIDUAL to the COLLECTIVEBreaking the isolation: English barriers, opportunity to meet others from same culture (identity and familiar “space”)Verbalizing sense of exclusion: being thankful but feeling of not being treated equally. Re-valuing assets:recognition of professional, social and political backgroundsRe-encountering with dreams and expectations: chance to bring back forgotten aspirations that they gave up because of immediate needs. Sharing systemic and structural analysis: community-based and academic researches about newcomer issues that overcome an individualist approachLACK OF KNOWLEDGE to the AWARENESSUnderstanding Canadian political: levels of government, its specific responsibilities in order to advocate effectively (policy recommendations)Knowing decision-making process: when and with whom to develop a political and collective action Informing and using institutional spaces for civic participation:deputations, community consultations, bill readings, meetings wit political representatives Voting process: political parties’ platforms', All Candidate Meetings, citizen duties, etc Training on key aspects: leadership, community organizing, public speaking, engaging media, use of social networks, documenting community process (video), design a campaign, etc.Realizing that immigrant success measured only by my labour market outcomes: promoting that social integration means also social and political participation.
