Cloud services represent a fundamental shift in how IT services are provisioned and consumed. For IT and business leaders, it means a shift away from IT as a capital expenditure, into a model where it becomes an operational cost. This yields several important benefits:Increased business elasticityEasier to exit or enter marketsAbility to respond faster to changing market conditionsIncreased connection, collaborationBetter connection to customers, partners, suppliers and other stakeholdersCost savingsReduced need for local infrastructure and operational managementFree budget for strategic initiativesEnable organizations to send non-core competencies to the cloud; focus spend on competitive differentiationIn short, cloud computing enables specialization. By tapping technologies available as a service instead of owning and managing all IT systems, companies can invest more of their time and resources in focusing on what truly differentiates them in the marketplace.

Big amounts of data are generated every day through a variety of sources:The most familiar method is people creating data—in their jobs and outside of them (think social technologies, much of it consumer generated)Devices also generate vast amounts of data, for example, such as captured by sensor or tracking technologiesAs our storage capacity increases (larger storage can be obtained for cheaper prices), so does the amount of dataSimilarly, as network bandwidth increases, so does our capacity to consume more information
In August 2010, Avanade commissioned a survey of 543 C-level executives and IT decision-makers in 17 countries.Key findings show us that the data deluge is real. In fact, the majority of respondents report being overwhelmed by the amount of data in the workplace. Many employees feel constantly distracted by multiple streams of information – this is especially true of C-level executives. Despite feeling overwhelmed, executives have an insatiable desire for more data. 61 percent of all executives say they still want faster access to data. Further, one in three reports they desire even more sources of data in order to do their job better.Companies appear to be addicted. The majority of respondents believe information will fundamentally change their business. And yet today, only a minority views their company data as a strategic differentiator. Most, instead, see it as a consequence of doing business. To see the full survey, see https://go.avanade.com/intranet/ark/docdetail.aspx?guid=89d1301b-9158-460a-a2bd-8372d09bb8a8.

Suggested flow:Consider this: On December 9, 2008, the mouse celebrated its 40th birthday. Even older, the QWERTY keyboard was invented in 1874. Yet more than 100 years later, we are still using this same design, which was aimed at preventing typewriter keys from jamming together by slowing down our typing. While all other areas have advanced tremendously over the past decades, human interfaces have lagged behind. Now, new user interfaces and experiences present the opportunity to improve the last mile between our brains and all this computing power. Avanade sees this as a trend toward natural user experiences. Using rich-client and rich-internet applications, natural user experiences increase collaboration, customer engagement and sales. They do so through enhanced, intuitive and interactive interfaces. These technologies can include:Internet technologiesMobile technologiesTouch computingDigital pensE-ink

The “consumerization of IT” has been happening now for several years. And while the growth of this trend presents consumers, and their respective enterprises, with a variety of technology choices, the primary challenge is a business one: Enterprises need to know what problem they are trying to solve, by adopting or supporting devices and social technologies used by their employees. Business have the opportunity to not only affect the productivity of their workforce, but to enable better outreach to their own customers as well. Beyond the desktop - Mobility spans several mega-trends in technology: the rise of the smartphone as a primary gateway to the Internet, the emergence of post-PC computing devices,. These megatrends are creating a multi-platform landscape in the enterprise unlike anything previously deployed by IT.Rise of the “app”- a new battlefield for technology vendors selling mobile software and services in bite-sized appsMultiple platforms – Lacking dominant players in consumer technology, organizations are faced with supporting multiple platforms and increasing their IT complexity.Social networking services are shifting from disruptive technologies to business-critical communications and collaboration tools. In fact, Gartner predicts 20% of business users will use social networks as their primary means of business communications by 2014. They are becoming Social Productivity tools.
The enterprise workplace environment is being reshaped as the boundaries between corporate and personal lives blur through the collision of overlapping forces. The adoption of consumer technologyThe rise of consumer services and social networkingUbiquitous connectivity, combined with new working habits (“always on”)For IT, blurred boundaries drives a greater need for collaboration between business units and IT, as well as flexible/responsive IT policies. Also, the entry of personal devices and applications into corporate environments creates risks and opportunities for organizations.
Information worker demandsComputing is evolving in a way that promises significant benefits for business executives and employees while at the same time posing both opportunities and challenges for IT executives. In the past, remote working might have been confined to roles such as field engineers, delivery drivers or sales people. Now, many other roles have the opportunity to work remotely, whether from home, commuting or other location. Remote working has been enabled by the growth in communications technologies and made easier by new forms of portable computing devices. Many of these devices have become standard consumer products. There has been a burgeoning rise in public social networking sites and public cloud applications. Consumers now have great understanding and experience of the value of IT in a personal context. Those consumers, during the working day as company employees, are now asking “Why can’t business computing work like this?” The personal consumer device experience is causing business executives and employees alike to push their IT departments to rethink the way IT services are delivered. They want to know why their personal devices can’t be used for business purposes too and why they have to carry a heavy bag load of company issued kit to stay in touch with colleagues and business partners when their smart phone could do most of the job while out travelling.

The Virtual Care demo was developed by the Avanade and Accenture Solutions Showcase at Microsoft. It utilizes Windows 7 touch technology, LiveExpert video chat engine, Microsoft Kinect, and Microsoft HealthVault to create a complete health diagnosis package. The experience the patient is immersed into is one of simplicity and convenience. Where before, a patient would have to make an appointment to see a doctor, a patient can now go into a clinic and, with the help of a nurse, be instantly connected with a doctor from anywhere on the globe. Simultaneously, the doctor experiences new levels of productivity and precision. This system allows doctors to meet with more patients every day, and specialists to see specific patients no matter where they are. And just as though the doctor were there in person, various pieces of equipment (ex. Microsoft Kinect) can be remotely controlled by the doctor to collect data, run analysis, and communicate instructions. Our goal was to use the Kinect, an innovative tool from Microsoft initially developed for gaming, to create something of value to the Healthcare market. With the ability to track body motion in three dimensions, Kinect serves as an excellent analysis and instructive tool for a variety of common medical conditions.
Purpose: Show an example of the many technology trends that can be used to support strategic business choices. This is an example only—the way the technology can be aligned to choices of survival, growth or innovation can vary by company, depending on specific needs. The visual depicts the multiple choices, and paths, that organizations can take to achieve their business goals. Suggested flow: The technology choices that organizations make can help place them on a path to control costs and grow, and innovate for the future. As the technology landscape changes—and new options become available, choosing the right mix, means stepping on the path to success. As we consider the topics in this presentation, which journey would YOU take? Which technological path would drive the most competitive advantage for your organization? Avanade has proven experience working with these technologies and in helping our customers address their business goals through IT solutions.
