A basic report on Scoliosis

2. Scoliosis, from the Greek word “skolíōsis,”

meaning “Crooked.”

3. Scoliosis is the curving of the spine, often

causing pain, slowed reflexes, and an
asymmetrical body.

4. Scientists are currently trying to find the

cause of scoliosis, it isn’t known for sure
yet.
 If you have scoliosis, you were born with
it, and it may have progressed over time.
 Scoliosis sometimes presents with other
genetic diseases such as “Floppy-baby
syndrome” or Neurofibromatosis.

5. Scoliotic curves greater than 10˚ affect 2-

3% of the United States.
 Scoliotic curves greater than 20˚ affect 1
in 2500 people.
 Curves that turn to the right are more
common than those that turn to the left.
 “C” curves are slightly more common
than “S” curves.

6. Scoliosis can be managed by wearing a

brace, commonly made out of fiberglass
or plastic, for 22-23 hours per day.
 Surgery is also an option, but it is only
recommended for people whose
scoliosis interferes greatly with their life,
and it is nearly impossible to completely
straighten a scoliotic spine.
