Colors: RGB or CMYK
• Printers and monitors uses two different ways of producing color
• (RedGreenBlue)
Files for TV and video use light to project an image
• (CyanMagentaYellow blacK)
When printing, ink is used to place an image on a page
Color Representation: RGB or CMYK ?
Additive colors Subtractive colors*
*Black is only used to simple create pure black on printed paper
Color Representation: RGB or CMYK ?
• Pixels can produce 1 of 256
(8 bits) shades of R,G, & B
• Three channels combines to
produce 24-bit color
• Can produce 16,777,216
colors (2 to the 24 power)

Image Representation
Image Representation
• Each pixel can be represented it by its 3
actual RGB values
• The value scale has 256 different values
• Each value is a number between 0 and
255 and one needs 8 bits to represent
such a number therefore 8+8+8=24 bits
to fully represent an RGB color on a
single pixel
• Size of a color image: w * h * 24 bits =
(w * h*24)/8 B
A 640 x 480 color image takes 921,600 B = 900 KB!
Resolution
• Resolution usually refers to the number of pixels on a surface whether a display
or image
• Resolution terminology varies according to the intended output device.
• PPI (pixels per inch) refers to screen resolution (monitors)
• DPI (dots per inch) refers to print resolution
• Images are displayed on your computer screen at display (or screen) resolution
(72 or 96 ppi).
• The typical desktop printer needs 150-300 dpi.

Raster VS Vector
Raster Graphics
• Graphics made up of tiny squares
• Squares are called “pixels”
• Pixel is short for picture element
• Not scalable
Vector Graphics
• The computer stores the information as lines and curves
• Created using math formulas
• Example:
The computer does not remember what the circle looks like. It remembers
the center point and area of the circle and then redraws the image.
Raster VS Vector
Raster
Raster VS Vector
Vector Graphics
• Manipulate shapes with precision
• Line drawings, maps, cartoons,
diagrams
• Stored as math formulas
• Can resize with excellent clarity
• Small file size
Raster Graphics
• Images are easily edited
• Realistic images, photographs
• Stored as pixels
• Pixelates when enlarged
• Large file size
Raster to Vector conversion
Editing Softwares
• Raster Programs
• Photoshop, Pixlr, Corel Photopaint, Gimp, Paint
• Vector Programs
• Illustrator, Indesign, Flash
