3. Mission and Vision
Nourish is a South African non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting local communities, promoting social responsibility
and encouraging environmental education.
Nourish strives to improve the lives of people and the environment We believe that the environmental integrity of a
community is inextricably linked to the strength of its people, body and soul. Our objective is to find an integrative approach
to community empowerment that:
• educates communities on nutrition, sustainability and the vital role of the environment in their lives
• builds capacity in environmental entrepreneurship thereby improving livelihood options and access to good nutrition
• provides assistance in creating platforms through which the public and businesses can actualise transparent and sustainable
community upliftment
• promotes social responsibility amongst the general public
Our purpose flows from our passion for Africa as our home, from our belief that improving our local communities is an
investment in our collective future. In all aspects of this work, we strive to create an environment of encouragement,
empowerment, compassion, and mutual respect.

4. Hi all Founder’s Letter
It is an exquisite honour and dream for me to even be writing this letter. A few years ago Nourish was a small thought in my heart, and a hope that I would carry and
work on into the small hours of the night. Over time, Nourish actually became a reality and I decided to work full time on a purpose that means so much to me--- being
able to bring change and upliftment to people and communities wherever I am. Nourish has truly given me the chance to educate, to change the way communities
see the environment, and to make lives better. What could be more rewarding?
I spent 2012 working full time on making Nourish not only a reality but a success, and I would not have been able to do it without the emotional support, numerous
cups of milky coffee and love from many friends, and of course, my family. Financially I have received personal donations to enable Nourish to accomplish so many
goals that, with a lump in my throat, I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU. The change Nourish has made in the lives of children will not fade but will resound for
years to come.
This year has not only been rewarding but also, as you can imagine, immensely challenging. At this stage I am the only full time employee and responsibilities as well
as many hopes sit squarely on my shoulders. Sometimes trials, Africa time, dealing with borders and bureaucracies and seeking funding has left me in tears – but this is
all part of the learning process and I embrace these challenges as necessary ones that I need to go through in order to grow. I was taught that going through a fire
refines gold.. That a bushfire is necessary to clear away the undergrowth so new fresh shoots of grass can grow... Well that is one way of looking at all the late nights,
hard work and challenges – they refine us to make sure our goals and purposes are pure -and I truly believe, they are.
I would like to thank every single person who got involved not only with Nourish, but with me this year- sharing a glass of wine while brainstorming projects, shopping
for school uniforms in ridiculously crowded African markets, wrapping present after present late into the night. You have all been a part of making this year of my life
and Nourish into the success it is!
To quote Ralph Arbitelle,
~Success is a journey, not a destination ~
Thank you all for making the journey fantastic!
Finally, I draw my inspiration from the words of Ralph Waldo Emmerson,
~To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal
of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social
condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. ~
Look forward to another amazing year filled with inspiration and change!

7. Nourish Reach and Spatial Distribution
Nourish has focused its projects on the following regions:
Project Reach
Gauteng
Swaziland
Limpopo
Mpumalanga
Mozambique 7
8. Travel Trees
The project Travel Trees is about planting both fruit trees and indigenous trees in rural communities and urban slums to have the following
effects:
• Contribute towards carbon offsetting
• Provide long-term food security and nutrition through fruit trees
• Provide a platform of education about nature, trees, sustainability and the environment whenever we do tree plantings at schools or
orphanages.
Nourish has done a few major tree plantings this year:
• Earth Day ( with funds from private donors through our Valentines Tree Campaign, as well as trees donated by Belgro Nursary)
• Arbour Month Mpumalanga ( with funds from Odie Air, Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA), Garonga, Jemax Aviation, Africa
in Focus, Savanna Private Game Reserve, Junxion Communication )
• Arbour Month Limpopo ( with funds from private donors as well as Ashtons Tours )
• AAOCISDA Volunteer Trip
• The Expedition Project 2012 (TEP2012) Trip
**NB Accompanying Educational Talks were done at Sigagule Creche, Sihlekisi Primary School, Twalakule Primary School, and Tenteleni Primary
School
Nourish spent R 3 639 this financial year on trees alone. This does not include costs associated with tree plantings such as educational talks,
fertilizer, compost, transport to schools etc. which almost matches the costs of the trees themselves.
Nourish planted 92 trees which were distributed as follows:
• 6 – AACOSIDA orphanage in Maputo, Mozambique
• 10 – Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre, Banakekeleni Orphanage, and Joyce’s Orphanage in Alexandra Township, Gauteng, South Africa
• 10 – Tenteleni Primary School & Masihambisane Combined School, Kanyamazane, township, Mpumalanga, South Africa
• 62 – various orphans and vulnerable homes in Sigagule, Keyelani and Gazita communities, as well as a community vegetable garden,
Limpopo, South Africa
• 4 –Twalakule Primary School, Dwarsloop, Mpumalanga, South Africa
8
10. Green Fingers
The concept of this project is to support vulnerable homes, orphanages and communities with
sustainable vegetable gardens that they can harvest to increase nutrition and sell for profit should
their be a large crop. This profit can be used to buy food or ploughed back into the garden.
Nourish has successfully implemented vegetable gardens at the following:
• AACOSIDA Orphanage in Maputo, Mozambique
• Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre in Alexandra Township, Gauteng, South Africa
On average these vegetable gardens as well as compost/ wood shavings cost R 500.00 per garden.
Nourish tailors each one to the individual needs of the orphanage and their specific problems,
whether it be lack of space, rats or unfertile soil etc and aims to do this through creative and
dynamic ideas such as:
• Raised bed vegetable gardens
• Using cow dung, as well as old bones, and rusted tins to add nutrients to the soil
• Potatoes layered in stacked tyres
• Planting in old tires
Most gardens include the following vegetables: potatoes, maize, onions, tomatoes, spinach, green
peppers, carrots, and/or beetroot.
10
12. Secret Santa
This annual project is a branch of Santa Shoebox whereby a child ( orphaned, poor or
vulnerable ) who will not receive a Christmas present, or who has never received a present, is
given one by a sponsor. Each gift, wrapper colourfully in a shoe box, contains the following
items which are both fun and useful for the child:
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloth, sweets, school supplies, a toy, an outfit of clothing.
On average a shoebox will cost R 200.00 to put together. Many sponsors choose to put together
their own shoebox, in which case Nourish will provide the name, sex and age of a child.
Alternatively sponsors deposit the funds into the Nourish account and the box gets packed
on their behalf.
This year Nourish packed and distributed 16 Secret Santa Shoeboxes. Our target children
were orphaned, vulnerable and abused children staying at Thuthuzela Aid Community
Centre. The boxes were personally sponsored by private individuals.
12
14. Dress 4 Success
Formerly a branch of Kit-a-Kid ( a Children’s Eco Training project ), Dress 4 Success aims to
equip orphans and vulnerable children with the necessary uniform to go to school. Each
uniform “kit” costs about R 250.00 and includes school shoes, pants/skirt, a shirt, socks , and
a jersey.
Nourish was able to distribute 31 uniforms this year in the following regions:
• Sigagule Village ( 15 children )
• Keyalane Village ( 16 children )
Sponsorship for the above uniforms was through private sponsors, as well as Parkfield
Primary School in Surrey, UK.
14
16. Feedback
Nourish is feeding 20 children on a monthly basis at AACOSIDA orphanage in Maputo,
Mozambique through monthly funding received from FEEDSA, a South African NGO. This
funding has been received since May 2012 and has been instrumental in providing AACOSIDA
with monthly food parcels to the value of R 2 500.00. Nourish keeps comprehensive receipts
of food items bought, which include all staple food items. Nourish has also received once off
donations of non-perishable foods for AACOSIDA which were delivered in April 2012.
Nourish also assisted Banakekeleni orphanage in Alexandra Township, Gauteng, South Africa
with boxes of non-perishable food items and tinned food donated by Alexander Forbes.
Ultimately this project aims to run a long term feeding scheme by redistributing food
between lodges, restaurants etc and orphanages or vulnerable families. Once a driver and a
refrigerated truck have been procured, Nourish will be able to continue this project on a
sustainable basis.
16
18. Sole Mates
Soles Mates for Peace is an American charity that sends boxes of personalised flip flop shoes
for distribution to orphans or needy children in the rural villages and urban slums in which
Nourish works. Nourish was introduced to Sole Mates for Peace in 2011.
We distributed 136 shoes this year in the following regions:
• Mozambique
• Swaziland **
**Nourish supplemented their support in Swaziland with shoes collected by one of the
fundraising initiatives Party 4 the Planet. Shoes were collected at a Barefoot for Poverty Party
held April 2011.
18
20. Trash 2 Treasure
This project teaches skills and allows local artisans and men/woman who want to create a livelihood to
create crafts from recyclable materials e.g. plastic, tin, wire, glass etc. Nourish started bi-monthly crafting
classes in Welverdiend community in South Africa in July 2012 and crafting has continued since then.
Nourish has a core crafting group consisting of 3 women.
Focus this year has been on generating interest amongst crafters in the community as well as doing a
feasibility study in the lodges as to whether they would stock the crafts. Nourish has received a positive
response from many lodges including And Beyond, Tshukudu, as well as from local retailers such as MJ’s
Photographic, etc.
Nourish has begin selling stock at outdoor markets, and has sold a number of bottletop earrings through
the Farmers Market in Pretoria. Noursh’s biggest sale to date was 40 recycled paper bead bracelets which
were ordered from the USA.
All stock is available from our online boutique shop www.nourish-org-za.mysupadupa.com
In the next year Nourish plans to place stock in lodges and shops, to allow for more profit to be derived for
the community members.
Handbags are also being hand sewn with local bright material (Capulanas) by the orphanage in
Mozambique to try to generate sustainable income. These are also available from Nourish’s online shop.
20
22. Community Craft Centre & Library
The idea for the community craft and education centre was initiated in November 2011 when
Prince Nakuna from Save the Elephants – SA suggested that Nourish should approach the
local chieftains of the Sigagule area to obtain land. Nourish’s first meeting with Induna Nyathi
was initiated by Prince. Since then, with assistance from Paul Mathonsi ( a Nourish director) ,
who acted as our representative and translator, several meetings were held with local
municipalities, the elders of the community and Induna Mnisi, who holds authority over the
local land requests.
In August 2012 the Nourish application for a site on the Orpen road was approved and
granted. This land is to be used to build a community craft centre, where Trash 2 Treasure
crafts will be sold, as well as education centre, where Nourish will have a library, offering
educational talks and computer lessons. It is the aim to have a bore hole and community
vegetable garden on the site. In August 2012 the Nourish team planted the corner poles, as
well as did a Site Development plant to allow for further development. Plans are underway
to clear thorny vegetation off the land in September with assistance from community
members, Nourish interns as well as students from Southern Cross.
In the coming financial year Nourish will fence the land and seek funding to begin building.
22
23. Alexandra Township Photography
Project
This project was inspired in March 2012 when the founder, Sarah Bergs spent a month in Alexandra
Township living at Thuthuzela Aid Centre. With this project Nourish aims to teach township youth
photographic skills, to encourage awareness and tourism into Alexandra township as a form of
upliftment and ultimately, through the involvement of both novices and professionals, produce a
picture coffee table book on Township Life.
• Nourish’s first step forward was involvement from Christopher Rimmer, a professional
photographer based in Australia who took time out in July 2012 to assist us with a day walking
photo shoot of Alexandra Township.
• Nourish met with Fiona Peake, editor of Pixmag, a photographic magazine, who is keen to get
involved with photographic lessons as well as offering Nourish a slot in her magazine.
• Nourish also met with Ma Afrika Tikkun, the community centre in Alexandra township to start
discussions on having photographic lessons with children, youth and unemployed adults.
• Jenna Munro, a student from the University of Pretoria and semi-professional photographer, has
also become involved not only to assist with photography in the township, but also to also assist
with meetings and admin related to the project.
In the coming year Nourish hopes roll out monthly photographic lessons at the Ma Afrika Tikkun
community centre, as well as to generate interest in the project both within Alexandra and
externally. It is envisaged that this will be a 2-3 year project.
23
25. Beneficiaries
Nourish works to support and uplift people and the planet. In particular our involvement is with
orphans and vulnerable children as well as with schools in rural communities and urban slums. We
have adopted two orphanages in particular:

25
26. AACOSIDA
AACOSIDA Orphanage in Maputo, Mozambique is run by Dumsane and Clementina Maccamo.
Nourish started a relationship with AACOSIDA in May 2011 and have been supporting them ever
since. When Nourish first met AACOSIDA they provided shelter, food and support to over 60
orphaned, neglected, and abused children. In the interim period their funding has been stopped
and grants have reached an end. They are now completely dependent on private donors for
funding. Nourish has supported AACOSIDA in the following ways:
• Sole Mates for Peace July 2011
• Painted the whole orphanage November 2011
• Food and clothing donations, including blankets and toothbrushes for each child April 2012
• Implemented filing and admin support April 2012

AACOSIDA has been almost entirely adopted by Nourish. Nourish is now able to shelter, feed and
support 20 children.
In the coming year Nourish to train Dumsane and Clementina in administration as well as how to
operate a creche so as to better their skills. Nourish intends to continue the close and supportive
relationship.
26
27. Thuthuzela
Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre , based in Alexandra Township in Gauteng, South Africa
was founded and is run by Elizabeth Monyela, with the support of her staff team. The
orphanage houses 16 children and their creche facility cares for over 40 children daily.
Nourish became involved with Thuthuzela in October 2011 and since then has provided
them with the following support:
• Planted a vegetable garden November 2011
• Secret Santa presents for each child and a Christmas tree for the orphanage December 2011.
• Took over the daily running of the orphanage for a month to provide support so that
Elizabeth could take annual leave (for the first time in 6 years) March 2012
• Facilitated the donation of toys for the creche from a private donor March 2012
• Planted indigenous trees April 2012
Nourish visits Thuthuzela numerous times throughout the year, and it has since become our
base for many initiatives in Alexandra township.
27

33. Parties 4 the Planet
This is a fundraising project whereby Nourish holds an event or “party” and raises funds or
goods such as trees, clothes or tinned food at the door. The items or funds raised get
directed towards one of the Nourish Projects.
Nourish kick-started the year with a very successful Party 4 the Planet, which was held in
April of 2011 at Josmacs. With a theme of Barefoot for Poverty, the entrance fee for this
party was a pair of shoes. Many staff from local lodges in the Timbavati as well as the
Hoedspruit community showed up to support the Nourish fundraising event. Over 100 pairs
of shoes were collected and distributed to El Shaddai, and Young Heroes orphanages in
Swaziland.
33
34. Internships
Nourish had its first 2 international interns this year from July – September 2012
• Regina Bosl was a German intern who was studying her Masters
degree in International Relations and Development Politics at the
University of Duisburg-Essen. She found Nourish online when she
was searching for a hands on experience of a grassroots sustainable
project where she could learn and gain experience as well as make a
difference. Her time here was challenging, but she broke many
personal boundaries and left with a true passion for the people and
heart of Africa.
• Ria Hooper was a British intern who is a professional chef by trade.
Being between jobs she decided to come to South Africa to discover
first hand exactly what Nourish is accomplishing on the ground. Ria
hopes to make her trips to SA annually.
During their 3 month stay with Nourish, accommodation was in a self catering cottage at
Ridgeway Bushcamp... The internship was not all work and no play, as the interns also
enjoyed the Panorama Route and a weekend in Sabie, a few nights in the Kruger National
Park, a visit to Soweto and Alexandra townships and a 2 week trip to Mozambique. Costs
for an internship begin at R 7000 per month depending on inclusions. 34
35. Objectives for 2013
Nourish’s vision for this year is to continue with all the projects which were initiated over the last year. We intend to
continue to raise sponsorship – both cash and in kind -through private donors using social media platforms. We hope to
