Faith Goals
At a recent retreat, I was asked what my personal goals were for the next
year, 3 years, and 5 years. In all honesty, the question put me on my
heels. I could come up with professional goals, but personal goals? I
realized I didn’t have any. None. Zero.
Back in my teens and 20’s, I set all kinds of goals. As an athlete, I had
performance goals. As a student, I had educational goals. As a ministry
candidate, I had professional goals which continued into my years as an
ordained pastor. At each of my churches, I had goals for what we would
accomplish in ministry. I know what goals are. I know how to set them.
I just didn’t have any personal goals.
As I have been reflecting on this question, I began to realize that
personal goals run the gamut. We have relational goals, health & fitness
goals, vacation goals, financial goals, and spiritual goals. You can pick up
any number of self-help books to help you set SMART* goals in most of
these areas…but what about spiritual goals? Have you ever stopped to
think about something in your faith that you would like to grow towards
or attain?
The Apostle Paul often spoke of goals. One of my favorite places is in
his letter to the Philippians, where he writes, “I want to know Christ and
the power of his resurrection…” (Philippians 3:10, NRSV) How’s that
for a goal?
As we read on, he writes this, “this one thing I do: forgetting what lies
behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the
goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ
Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14, NRSV)
Do you have a spiritual goal? Have you set a faith goal?

SERMON SERIES:
As we move into the culmination of the liturgical year, we sit with some of Jesus’ final teachings to his
disciples and through some of his interactions with the scribes and Pharisees...each of these passages reveal
distinguishing signs of those who truly understand the Good News Jesus brought.

September 1 - Today’s sermon was based on Luke 14:7-14 and Pastor Steve’s message was called, “The

September 15 - This morning we celebrated our FALL KICKOFF! Our Chancel Choir returned to
morning worship and blessed us with their voices. Our moment with children, also returned, with Pastor
Steve talking to the kids about the woman who had 10 coins and lost one. “God’s Economy,” was Pastor
Steve’s sermon title, which was a continuation of his sermon series, The Controversial Christ. Today’s
scripture was Luke 15:1-10. Jeff Thomas shared special music, “Reckless Love,” by Corey Ashbury.
Everyone had a wonderful time at our Fall Kickoff Tailgate Party out on the patio. We enjoyed stadium
style foods and an on location, gourmet coffee and tea bar, Manny’s Coffee!
September 22 - Today, we had a guest speaker, Dr. Larry Hygh Jr.. Dr. Hygh shared his message, “Are
We Entertaining God’s Angels,” based on two scriptures: Mark 1:14-20 and Hebrews 13:1-3. Special music
was congregational participation in , “Lead Me, Guide Me.”

Mat that had a pineapple on it! Pastor Steve’s message was based on Luke 16:19-31 and called, “The
Words of the Prophets.” Special Music was a song called, “We are Marching,” which mixed African and

Good news October 2019

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@gmail.com OCTOBER 2019 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.com IN THIS ISSUE: • World Communion • Laity Sunday • Trunk or Treat • Weekday Bible Study • Service Sunday Faith Goals At a recent retreat, I was asked what my personal goals were for the next year, 3 years, and 5 years. In all honesty, the question put me on my heels. I could come up with professional goals, but personal goals? I realized I didn’t have any. None. Zero. Back in my teens and 20’s, I set all kinds of goals. As an athlete, I had performance goals. As a student, I had educational goals. As a ministry candidate, I had professional goals which continued into my years as an ordained pastor. At each of my churches, I had goals for what we would accomplish in ministry. I know what goals are. I know how to set them. I just didn’t have any personal goals. As I have been reflecting on this question, I began to realize that personal goals run the gamut. We have relational goals, health & fitness goals, vacation goals, financial goals, and spiritual goals. You can pick up any number of self-help books to help you set SMART* goals in most of these areas…but what about spiritual goals? Have you ever stopped to think about something in your faith that you would like to grow towards or attain? The Apostle Paul often spoke of goals. One of my favorite places is in his letter to the Philippians, where he writes, “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection…” (Philippians 3:10, NRSV) How’s that for a goal? As we read on, he writes this, “this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14, NRSV) Do you have a spiritual goal? Have you set a faith goal? GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Rev. Grant Higiya Bishop Rev.
