My Spiritual Siblings,
We have been existing in a strange, physically distant world that none of us
had anticipated when 2020 began. We have learned new skills and
acquired new abilities to survive in this new world. We have learned how
to worship and fellowship in our homes using pre-recorded worship
experiences and video-conferencing. We have learned how to work
remotely, depending upon email, text, and telephone calls to check in with
one another. None us really wanted to learn how to do all these things in
such a short amount of time. Truth be told, we are doing more than
surviving this time: we are doing well!
At the same time, we miss being together. We miss human contact and
being able to see people smile. We want for this time of isolation to end
and for life to return to normal. Collectively, our city has worked together
to effectively flatten the curve of infection, which has a looking for a light
at the end of tunnel. Thankfully, this week Governor Newsom announced
a series of phases to re-open our city. Churches are in phase 3.
This was great to hear…but actual dates were noticeably absent from the
plan. We do not know when we will have the go ahead to be together in
worship again, which means that we will be continuing to produce our
NoHo FUMC “Worship Show” (If you haven’t tuned in, please do: it’s
quite good!) and using ZOOM teleconferencing for meetings, studies, and
fellowships. We will also continue to pray for one another and support one
another as best we can.
In the first chapter of Acts, the disciples ask when he is going to restore the
Kingdom of Israel. Jesus gives an interesting response, “It isn’t for you to
know the times of seasons that God has set. Rather, you will receive power
when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts
1:6-7, CEB)
We are not in a season of waiting; we are in a season of doing! We need to
continue to doing the things that Jesus has called us to do and be, no
matter the situation, no matter the season, no matter the day. I pray that
our lives and our ministry bear witness to the one who has called us
together as a community in very real ways in this virtual world.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve
A LETTER FROM PASTOR STEVE
MAY SERMON SERIES: AUDACITY OF HOPE
Overcoming fear opens us up to some good things. We will turn to the book of 1 Peter to discuss what
we can offer the community around us, as Jesus helps us slip from the shackles of our fears.
May 3 Audacious Growth 1 Peter 2:2-10
What does it take to grow? The author suggests that God desires us to become the new temple: to grow in faith
and spiritual strength; and to be built into a spiritual house built on Christ…who has called us out of darkness
and into his marvelous light. What will it take to be built into God’s temple?
May 10 Audacious Endurance
Endurance is never fun, but it can carry tremendous meaning and reward. Enduring and persevering means
suffering. Whenever we are tempted to quit, we begin to suffer. Yet giving up on one’s goals and dreams simply
trades the suffering in for the bitterness of regret. Christ endured for our sake; we are called to follow for the sake
of each other.
May 17 The Audacity of Doing Good
It isn’t enough simply to suffer: if we are going to suffer it should happen because we are doing good. Keep your
conscience clean, not just according to you, but in the eyes that are on you, so that those who criticize you are
proven wrong.
May 24 The Audacity of Humility 1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11
Even in the middle of uncertainty and trials, remain humble and remember that you are not God! Let God be
God, resist what is evil, and trust that in time, God will restore, support, strengthen, and establish you.
May 31 Obey Your Thirst John 7:37-39
The “Living Water” passage. There is a double movement here: those who are thirsty and those who believe in
Jesus. Both are invited to come and drink. What are people thirsty for? What are you thirsty for?
HIGHLIGHTS OF VIRTUAL WORSHIP
This was our first experience with putting together a worship service package. We were very blessed to already have
Tonya Peat, who brought our church into the 21st century, setting up online tithing, text to tithe, and live
streaming. The office staff decided to have all parts of worship, pre-recorded, in order to comply with the “Safer at
Home,” mandate. All parts were then sent to Tonya for editing. We feel very fortunate and blessed to have been
able to continue sharing worship with our church family and also, reaching many people outside of our bubble.
God is at work through us and we are very happy with the weekly online Worship services we have produced and
share on YouTube @nohofumc and on Facebook @nohofumc1.

HOW TO WORSHIP AND CONNECT IN A VIRTUAL WORLD

Worship services can be found online on YouTube @nohofumc and on Facebook @nohofumc1
Communion takes place on the first Sunday of every month. The Bishop has approved for Pastor Steve
to consecrate the elements virtually. We ask that you prepare your bread and wine (real or grape juice)
ahead of watching the worship service video.
Tithes and offerings may be given one of two ways:
Text to tithe by texting the amount you’d like to give to 844-954-1296. There is a one time set up and it
is fast and simple after that. You may also mail in your offerings to the church office at 4832 Tujunga
Avenue in North Hollywood, CA 91601
Every Sunday at 11:30 AM we gather virtually for coffee fellowship on Zoom, meeting ID 285 041 605.
Every Thursday we meet with Pastor Steve on Zoom for a prayer call, check-in, and second helpings of
Sundays sermon. Meeting ID 303 320 694.
If you are unable to get online for any reason we are able to send you a manuscript of our Sunday
service which includes the invocation, call to worship, prayers, hymn numbers, children’s moment and
Pastor Steve’s sermon. Call Nylean in the church office and a worship packet will be mailed to you.
If you or someone you care for needs prayer, a pastoral call, or assistance, please do not hesitate to
contact the church at nohofumc@gmail.com. The email is the best and fastest way to reach us.
Send in your photos for our Mother’s Day Montage
that will appear in our May 10th worship video.
Email a photo of you and your mother or you with
your kids and grandkids to nohofumc@gmail.com
by May 6th.
The Pantry is indebted to Temple Beth Hillel staff and Jesse, their awesome head of security, for their
ongoing support for the storage and packing operations. There are numerous 2-3 person teams packing
daily to meet the demand while maintaining social distancing. When some huge boxes of staple goods (35
lb. boxes) were received from LA Regional Food Bank a couple of weeks ago, they were off-loaded with
assistance of employees from CD 2, Paul Krekorian’s office (5,000 pounds of food). Volunteers are still
needed for new packing teams. Please email Barbara – barbara@nhifp.org if you can help.
Food donations can be brought to Temple Beth Hillel Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm. When you
take food to TBH, simply advise the security guard that you have food for the Pantry. You will be directed
to park and sit in your car while a member of the security staff brings a large cart, unloads the bags from
your trunk and takes the food to the storage area. With the rate of consumption and the unknown ability to
purchase, donations of non-perishable foods are badly needed and very much appreciated. Paper and/or
plastic bags are also needed.
You can also donate fresh fruit from your trees, non-perishable food or hygiene items by dropping off at
First Christian Church, 4390 Colfax Avenue, Studio City, during food distribution on Monday or Friday
between 7:30 – 10 am. You should pull into the parking lot off Colfax, drive up to the tables, say you are
dropping off and pop the trunk. Volunteers will unload for you – you will not need to get out of your
vehicle.
Another way to donate is by using the Pantry’s Amazon Wish List. Another way to donate is by using the
Pantry’s Amazon Wish List. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3M15OOOZO59FV?
ref=cm_sw_em_r_wl_dp_dwWlOwaFSwziu The order will be shipped to Temple Beth Hillel.
You can make a tax deductible donation by going to the NHIFP website (https://nhifp.org/donations/)
and donating via PayPal or your debit or credit card. You may also mail a donation directly to the Pantry at
4390 Colfax Avenue, Studio City 91304.
Pantry Operations During Coronavirus Pandemic
By Lynn Yoshizumi
Because so many of the regular Pantry volunteers are older, the
Pantry leaders, Barbara Javitz and Jane Poole, did not want to risk
their exposure to the coronavirus while working at the distribution
site. Instead they have recruited a new group of younger, stronger
volunteers (including both Muffett Brinkman and Pastor Steve) to
staff the distribution site on Monday and Friday mornings. The
hours have been shortened to 7:30 – 10 am and distribution is drive-
thru, with masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer and observing all social
distancing protocols. The daily bags are limited to just 160 so that
the supplies will last longer; this is an increase of close to 60% over
pre-COVID-19 demand.
Spring Cleaning DONE...Now What?
From Ken Craft, CEO of Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission
If ever you have had time to Spring Clean, this is the year as most people are sheltering and/or working
from home due to Covin-19.  Now that you have gone through your closets, for the ump-teenth time, and
thinned out your wardrobe, what should you do with your donations?
With Goodwill not taking donations at this time, I would highly, and with bias, recommend you donate
your spring cleaning donations to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission!  All donations will receive a
charitable receipt.
Because our 4 Thrift Stores are currently closed as non-essential retail and our Thrift Store Donation
Pick-up drivers are on furlough, please take a moment to leave your house, just long enough, to drop off
your donations at: 11076 Norris Street, Pacoima 91331
Here is the good news...When you pull into the parking lot, we are the large building to your left open
24/7 a day.  Simply honk your horn and shelter staff will assist you by taking your donations out of your
car.  No need for you to leave your seat!

In advance, thank you for being part of TeamHope by Donating, not Discarding, your clothes and
household items!

his brain and spinal cancer is growing, as is the original tumor behind his ear. The doctors are going to give
him oral chemo to slow the cancer and steroids to perk him up. Without any treatment, they suspect that
Grant has 2 weeks to live. His parents, Gabe and Karah, are not ready to say goodbye to their baby boy.
Gabe and Karah are friends of Sherri Perry.
• Caitlin Thomas, fell and broke her foot and has not been able to walk for a few weeks. The doctors have

Good News May 2020

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net May 2020 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.org IN THIS ISSUE: • Spring Cleaning Done? • Mother’s Day Montage • Virtual Worship • Virtual Connection • NHIFP Needs Help GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Rev. Dr. Grant Hagiya Bishop Rev. James Powell District Superintendent Rev. Steven F. Peralta Pastor Congregation Ministers Jeff Thomas Director of Music Roger Eshleman Organist Nylean Rapinac Administrator Patty Kelsey Director, Program Ministries Tonya Peat Director, Digital & Social Media My Spiritual Siblings, We have been existing in a strange, physically distant world that none of us had anticipated when 2020 began. We have learned new skills and acquired new abilities to survive in this new world. We have learned how to worship and fellowship in our homes using pre-recorded worship experiences and video-conferencing. We have learned how to work remotely, depending upon email, text, and telephone calls to check in with one another. None us really wanted to learn how to do all these things in such a short amount of time. Truth be told, we are doing more than surviving this time: we are doing well! At the same time, we miss being together. We miss human contact and being able to see people smile. We want for this time of isolation to end and for life to return to normal. Collectively, our city has worked together to effectively flatten the curve of infection, which has a looking for a light at the end of tunnel. Thankfully, this week Governor Newsom announced a series of phases to re-open our city. Churches are in phase 3. This was great to hear…but actual dates were noticeably absent from the plan. We do not know when we will have the go ahead to be together in worship again, which means that we will be continuing to produce our NoHo FUMC “Worship Show” (If you haven’t tuned in, please do: it’s quite good!) and using ZOOM teleconferencing for meetings, studies, and fellowships. We will also continue to pray for one another and support one another as best we can. In the first chapter of Acts, the disciples ask when he is going to restore the Kingdom of Israel. Jesus gives an interesting response, “It isn’t for you to know the times of seasons that God has set. Rather, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:6-7, CEB) We are not in a season of waiting; we are in a season of doing! We need to continue to doing the things that Jesus has called us to do and be, no matter the situation, no matter the season, no matter the day. I pray that our lives and our ministry bear witness to the one who has called us together as a community in very real ways in this virtual world. In Christ, Pastor Steve A LETTER FROM PASTOR STEVE
  • 2. MAY SERMON SERIES: AUDACITY OF HOPE Overcoming fear opens us up to some good things. We will turn to the book of 1 Peter to discuss what we can offer the community around us, as Jesus helps us slip from the shackles of our fears. May 3 Audacious Growth 1 Peter 2:2-10 What does it take to grow? The author suggests that God desires us to become the new temple: to grow in faith and spiritual strength; and to be built into a spiritual house built on Christ…who has called us out of darkness and into his marvelous light. What will it take to be built into God’s temple? May 10 Audacious Endurance Endurance is never fun, but it can carry tremendous meaning and reward. Enduring and persevering means suffering. Whenever we are tempted to quit, we begin to suffer. Yet giving up on one’s goals and dreams simply trades the suffering in for the bitterness of regret. Christ endured for our sake; we are called to follow for the sake of each other. May 17 The Audacity of Doing Good It isn’t enough simply to suffer: if we are going to suffer it should happen because we are doing good. Keep your conscience clean, not just according to you, but in the eyes that are on you, so that those who criticize you are proven wrong. May 24 The Audacity of Humility 1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11 Even in the middle of uncertainty and trials, remain humble and remember that you are not God! Let God be God, resist what is evil, and trust that in time, God will restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. May 31 Obey Your Thirst John 7:37-39 The “Living Water” passage. There is a double movement here: those who are thirsty and those who believe in Jesus. Both are invited to come and drink. What are people thirsty for? What are you thirsty for? HIGHLIGHTS OF VIRTUAL WORSHIP This was our first experience with putting together a worship service package. We were very blessed to already have Tonya Peat, who brought our church into the 21st century, setting up online tithing, text to tithe, and live streaming. The office staff decided to have all parts of worship, pre-recorded, in order to comply with the “Safer at Home,” mandate. All parts were then sent to Tonya for editing. We feel very fortunate and blessed to have been able to continue sharing worship with our church family and also, reaching many people outside of our bubble. God is at work through us and we are very happy with the weekly online Worship services we have produced and share on YouTube @nohofumc and on Facebook @nohofumc1. • 4. The Pantry is indebted to Temple Beth Hillel staff and Jesse, their awesome head of security, for their ongoing support for the storage and packing operations. There are numerous 2-3 person teams packing daily to meet the demand while maintaining social distancing. When some huge boxes of staple goods (35 lb. boxes) were received from LA Regional Food Bank a couple of weeks ago, they were off-loaded with assistance of employees from CD 2, Paul Krekorian’s office (5,000 pounds of food). Volunteers are still needed for new packing teams. Please email Barbara – barbara@nhifp.org if you can help. Food donations can be brought to Temple Beth Hillel Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm. When you take food to TBH, simply advise the security guard that you have food for the Pantry. You will be directed to park and sit in your car while a member of the security staff brings a large cart, unloads the bags from your trunk and takes the food to the storage area. With the rate of consumption and the unknown ability to purchase, donations of non-perishable foods are badly needed and very much appreciated. Paper and/or plastic bags are also needed. You can also donate fresh fruit from your trees, non-perishable food or hygiene items by dropping off at First Christian Church, 4390 Colfax Avenue, Studio City, during food distribution on Monday or Friday between 7:30 – 10 am. You should pull into the parking lot off Colfax, drive up to the tables, say you are dropping off and pop the trunk. Volunteers will unload for you – you will not need to get out of your vehicle. Another way to donate is by using the Pantry’s Amazon Wish List. Another way to donate is by using the Pantry’s Amazon Wish List. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/3M15OOOZO59FV? ref=cm_sw_em_r_wl_dp_dwWlOwaFSwziu The order will be shipped to Temple Beth Hillel. You can make a tax deductible donation by going to the NHIFP website (https://nhifp.org/donations/) and donating via PayPal or your debit or credit card. You may also mail a donation directly to the Pantry at 4390 Colfax Avenue, Studio City 91304. Pantry Operations During Coronavirus Pandemic By Lynn Yoshizumi Because so many of the regular Pantry volunteers are older, the Pantry leaders, Barbara Javitz and Jane Poole, did not want to risk their exposure to the coronavirus while working at the distribution site. Instead they have recruited a new group of younger, stronger volunteers (including both Muffett Brinkman and Pastor Steve) to staff the distribution site on Monday and Friday mornings. The hours have been shortened to 7:30 – 10 am and distribution is drive- thru, with masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer and observing all social distancing protocols. The daily bags are limited to just 160 so that the supplies will last longer; this is an increase of close to 60% over pre-COVID-19 demand.
  • 5. Spring Cleaning DONE...Now What? From Ken Craft, CEO of Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission If ever you have had time to Spring Clean, this is the year as most people are sheltering and/or working from home due to Covin-19.  Now that you have gone through your closets, for the ump-teenth time, and thinned out your wardrobe, what should you do with your donations? With Goodwill not taking donations at this time, I would highly, and with bias, recommend you donate your spring cleaning donations to Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission!  All donations will receive a charitable receipt.  Because our 4 Thrift Stores are currently closed as non-essential retail and our Thrift Store Donation Pick-up drivers are on furlough, please take a moment to leave your house, just long enough, to drop off your donations at: 11076 Norris Street, Pacoima 91331 Here is the good news...When you pull into the parking lot, we are the large building to your left open 24/7 a day.  Simply honk your horn and shelter staff will assist you by taking your donations out of your car.  No need for you to leave your seat!   In advance, thank you for being part of TeamHope by Donating, not Discarding, your clothes and household items! Hope of the Valley Where EVERYBODY and EVERYTHING Gets Another Chance!
