Hand me a different glass,
the days of rain and tears have worn me down
and left their tracks across my soul
like gullies and troughs in sandstone.
I’ve had my fill.
Hand me another glass,
because I am ready to drink in the days of sun,
the orange of light, the green of leaves,
and the scent of night-blooming jasmine.
I thirst.
Let me open the door,
greet some smiles and share the laughter and satisfaction
of love’s honest work.
I will lift the cup of compassion
and drink my fill.
It’s June and summer is starting. I remember the way June arrived as a relief: the
school year had come to an end and vacation began. Summer always whispered
adventure, freedom, and rest. Even though I no longer have a “summer
vacation”, I still can’t help but feel the next three months beckoning me with
these three words.
These words -- rest, freedom, and adventure -- stand in contrast to the
uncertainty we feel as a congregation and denomination. Church leaders across
the nation have gathered to discuss what to do in light of the 2019 Special
General Conference and whether or not we can continue to be United
Methodists as currently configured. In light of this uncertainty, we will be kicking
off this month with an important vote on our Statement of Inclusion. This
statement is a small but important way that our congregation will state what we
believe to be true about the church: that “all means all” and we will include
everyone in our embrace. We will lift and protect each other. We will listen to
each other’s stories. We will share in our celebrations and in our times of
grief...no matter what.
I believe this is important work. I believe this is the work of compassion and
reconciliation that God calls us to; yet it is hard, emotional work. Voting on a
statement is not the end: living into it will be the most important part. So as
summer arrives, will you drink from the cup of compassion with me? Will you
undertake the work of love? Will you pray for the 2019 California-Pacific
Annual Conference in Redlands, as we tackle the future of our church (June
12-15)? Keep doing the work of love...and I will keep you posted.
Blessings,
Pastor Steve

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
May 5 - Third Sunday of Easter and Communion Sunday. Pastor Steve’s sermon, “Side-By-Side,” was
based on John 21:1-19. Jeff shared special music, “Man of Sorrows.” We shared in the Sacrament of
Communion this morning. Announcements for the Month of May were shared by our Announcements
Team: Phillip Mottaz & Norman Kelsey. They shared announcements while trying not to spoil Avengers
End Game.
May 12 - Today we celebrated Mother’s and all the women in our lives who nurture us on Mother’s Day!
Today, all the ladies who came to church, received a pretty carnation, sweet peony hand sanitizer, and a
sweet note. Patty Kelsey had the children help hand out carnations to the women of the congregation
during Children’s Time. Pastor Steve shared his sermon based on John 10:22-30, titled, “Name Badges.”
Jeff Thomas shared special music, “Heal Our Land.” We enjoyed a special light luncheon for Mother’s
Day in the Lounge.
May 19 - Pastor Steve shared a moment with the kids this morning about following rules and gave them a
new rule, “Love one another, the way Jesus loves us.” Pastor Steve’s sermon, “Company Values,” was based
on John 13:31-35. Norman Kelsey shared special music, singing, “How They Love Each Other.”
May 26 - On this 6th Sunday of Easter, Patty Kelsey shared a moment with children about how we greet
each other and share the peace of Christ. Libeck and Shaun Vieten shared special music, “The Power of
Your Love.” Pastor Steve shared a message titled, “Continuing Ed.,” based on John 14:23-29 and we were
blessed to witness the Sacrament of Baptism for Skylar Rose Castillo. Following worship, the congregation
assisted in making 117 sack lunches, for the North Hollywood Interfaith Food Pantry.

The Rev. Dr. Joey McDonald Education Grant Fund
The McDonald Family formed the McDonald Scholarship Fund in memory of Rev. Dr. Joey McDonald,
who passed away after 28 years of ministry at North Hollywood First United Methodist Church. This
fund provides Education Grants for people working towards a college degree. The grants will be issued
up to the amount of $1,000.00 per year, per student, until the fund is exhausted.
Students are encouraged to apply for this educational grant for the 2019-2020 school year. The Education
Grant is a non-competitive grant. It carries no academic requirement or financial need threshold.
To qualify the student must meet the following criteria:
1. The student must be a member or related to an active church member or active constituent of
North Hollywood First United Methodist Church.
2. The student must be seeking a college-level degree (associate, bachelor, master, or doctorate). This
must be their first degree at each level. Students seeking a second bachelor or master degree will
not be eligible.
3. The student must be actively enrolled at a regionally accredited college or university in the United
States.
4. A student may continue to apply through the progression of their education (associate to bachelor
to master to doctorate).
To apply for the grant students must submit a written request by July 1st of the grant year. Applications
may be downloaded from www.nohofumc.org. The application will include applicant’s personal contact
information, relationship to North Hollywood FUMC, educational goals, and verification of enrollment.
The grants will be awarded by September 15th each year. The grant checks will be sent to directly to the
school before the Fall term. Students are welcome to reapply for a grant in the subsequent grant year.
The family formed the educational grant fund to support students pursuing post-secondary education, a
cause about which Dr. McDonald was very passionate. The fund was established with donations from
friends and family who wished to memorialize him. If you want to donate to the fund, please contact the
church office for details of the J.K. McDonald Memorial Fund.

Good News June2019

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.org IN THIS ISSUE: • Choir Recognition • Super Hero VBS • NOHO Alliance • McDonald Grant • Care Kits for Homeless GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Rev. Dr. Grant Hagiya Bishop Rev. James Powell District Superintendent Rev. Steven F. Peralta Interim Pastor Congregation Ministers Jeff Thomas Director of Music Roger Eshleman Organist Nylean Rapinac Administrator Patty Kelsey Director, Program Ministries Tonya Peat Director, Outreach Ministries Hand me a different glass, the days of rain and tears have worn me down and left their tracks across my soul like gullies and troughs in sandstone. I’ve had my fill. Hand me another glass, because I am ready to drink in the days of sun, the orange of light, the green of leaves, and the scent of night-blooming jasmine. I thirst. Let me open the door, greet some smiles and share the laughter and satisfaction of love’s honest work. I will lift the cup of compassion and drink my fill. It’s June and summer is starting. I remember the way June arrived as a relief: the school year had come to an end and vacation began. Summer always whispered adventure, freedom, and rest. Even though I no longer have a “summer vacation”, I still can’t help but feel the next three months beckoning me with these three words. These words -- rest, freedom, and adventure -- stand in contrast to the uncertainty we feel as a congregation and denomination. Church leaders across the nation have gathered to discuss what to do in light of the 2019 Special General Conference and whether or not we can continue to be United Methodists as currently configured. In light of this uncertainty, we will be kicking off this month with an important vote on our Statement of Inclusion. This statement is a small but important way that our congregation will state what we believe to be true about the church: that “all means all” and we will include everyone in our embrace. We will lift and protect each other. We will listen to each other’s stories. We will share in our celebrations and in our times of grief...no matter what. I believe this is important work. I believe this is the work of compassion and reconciliation that God calls us to; yet it is hard, emotional work. Voting on a statement is not the end: living into it will be the most important part. So as summer arrives, will you drink from the cup of compassion with me? Will you undertake the work of love? Will you pray for the 2019 California-Pacific Annual Conference in Redlands, as we tackle the future of our church (June 12-15)? Keep doing the work of love...and I will keep you posted. Blessings, Pastor Steve
