The church observes three High Holy Days in the course of a year: Christmas,
Easter, and Pentecost. Each day represents a pinnacle of God’s saving action and
presence in our world: Christmas is how God sent Jesus; Easter is how Jesus defeats
sin and death; and Pentecost is the reception of the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost is not commercialized and there is no traditional feast. It happens at a
time when people are starting to think about summer and vacation and are tired
from the discipline and focus of Lent and Easter. As a result, it remains the
mysterious of the three days, which is most unfortunate. You see, Pentecost is an
open-ended holiday: Pentecost is about how God remains present with us and how
the church—that is, you and me—continues on as God’s incarnate presence in the
world. Pentecost isn’t something that happened long ago: it is something which is
still being unveiled and realized.
I have always made it a point to be present with the congregations I serve on the
High Holy Days. But this year will be the first time in 24 years of ordained ministry
that I will not be with you. Two years ago, I promised my friend and colleague, Rev.
Dr. Cedrick Bridgeforth, that I would ride with him on the AIDS/Lifecycle Ride
when it happened again. Fast forward to October of 2021, and I discover that it
begins on June 5…which is Pentecost!
I have decided to honor my promise because the AIDS/Lifecycle Ride is the largest
fundraiser in support of HIV and AIDS research and support. The LGBT Center
of Los Angeles is a place where people who have been kicked out of their homes and
families find care and support. It provides community and care to people who
thought they had none. I believe that this is a place where Jesus’ work is being done,
and as a Christian minister, I want to be a part of it.
As I type this, I have raised $4,045.00 towards my goal of $5,000. Most of these
gifts have come from friends, family, and former parishioners…and I even have a few
Wesley School families who donated! As a collective whole, the ride has already
raised over 14 Million dollars! I am humbled to be a part of such generosity, and am
grateful that I can use my hobby to make a difference in our world.
This month is Pride: a designated month to raise awareness for the LGBTQ+
community as it fights for equality and acceptance. Our church will hold several
activities throughout the month in honor of Pride, and we invite you to grow in
awareness and appreciation as we affirm those in our community and church who
have been excluded in other places and situations. In particular, the upcoming Justice
Sing on June 11th will be especially impactful. Dinner starts at 5:30 in the Lounge,
with the program starting at 7:00 in the Sanctuary. I plan to be there, fresh off my
ride!
I cannot begin to stress how important these moments of celebrating one another
are for us as God’s people. In a world where anger and violence seem to hold the
upper hand, we are the ones God has called to make God’s love known in the world.
May the Holy Spirit continue to shape us into the image of Christ and give us the
power and courage to fulfill our welcoming statement.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve
2. Sermon Series: “Living the Spirit of Life”
On Pentecost, we celebrate the coming of the Spirit to raise the church out of hiding and out of
despair and to give the church wind at the back and fire in the bones and to encourage the church to
proclaim; no—to live the good news of Jesus Christ outwardly and invitation-ally.
June 5 (Pentecost)
“As the Spirit Gave Them Ability”
Acts 2:1-21
We sometimes say that Pentecost is the birthday of the church. Pentecost is also the beginning of the long
season we sometimes call Ordinary Time. We don’t mean ordinary as in run of the mill and boring, same
old, same old. No, in Ordinary Time, we are called; we are invited; we are equipped and empowered to live
the Spirit life. Rev. Scott Andrews will be present to lead communion.
June 12 (Trinity & Pride Sunday) “The Voice of the Spirit”
John 16:12-15
esus says that his sheep know his voice, which raises the questions, “Who do you listen to the most in this
world? Who do you turn to for guidance, comfort, and safety?”
June 19 (Juneteenth & Father’s Day) “Can I Get A Witness”
Jesus changed the life of a troubled man; who proceeded to share throughout the city what Jesus had done
for him. People need to hear what Jesus has done in the lives of people like you and me.
June 26 (Pride Sunday)
“Brought Home in Spirit”
An Ethiopian Eunuch asks if there is space in the church for him: a Gentile and a non-binary person. Philip,
fulfilling one of Isaiah’s visions, says yes and baptizes the Eunuch.
