2. CAREER SUMMARY
I obtained my bachelors in history at the University of Exeter (winning Dean’s Prize for Academic
Excellence in my class of 1986) where I then won a doctoral scholarship to study the transition of
Devon’s maritime economy. Following this I became a research assistant in the Sports Council for
Wales’ policy and research department (1989), evaluating projects encouraging sports participation
amongst socially excluded groups and assessing the value for money and efficiency of sports
governing bodies.
I moved to the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council in 1991 as its Tourism Development Officer. Here I
implemented a development strategy for the seaside resort of Barry Island, attracted new tourism
investors & public sector grant aid to the authority, provided technical advice to tourism operators &
was promoted to Principal Officer grade, deputising for the Chief Tourism Officer on the Management
Team. In 1993 I was appointed Marketing & Communications Officer at Torfaen Borough Council
where I became Head of the Public Relations Unit responsible for all PR, the marketing of the local
authority and its services and crisis management communications. I reported directly to the Deputy
Chief Executive & was a member of the Chief Executive’s Management Team.
In 1994 I became a senior lecturer at the (then) Cardiff Institute of Higher Education (later UWIC and
now Cardiff Metropolitan University) on the basis of my research training and expertise in tourism
and leisure strategy and public sector marketing. Here in the School of Tourism & Leisure I began
teaching and researching on my interests in marketing and critical tourism studies and shaping
curriculum spaces to combine them in undergraduate and postgraduate modules. In 1995 I became
Director of the new Masters in Tourism and Leisure Management Programme.
Having developed this into one of our leading programmes, I stepped down four years later to become
the new Welsh School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management’s first Director of Graduate
Studies and part of the School’s inaugural Management Team. During this crucial period in the rapidly
developing School I held a number of portfolios. In addition to being responsible for the overall
welfare of 40 doctoral students, I led our staff development strategy whilst we gained Investors in
People accreditation and I was briefly acting Head of School. In 2003 my research achievements were
acknowledged with the title of Reader, followed in 2006 by a University of Wales personal chair in
Tourism Studies in recognition of my academic leadership in three academic schools, a title I now
hold in the Welsh Centre for Tourism Research.
Since joining Cardiff Metropolitan University I have been at the forefront of creating its dynamic
research culture and have particularly focused on developing our well respected tourism, hospitality
and events group (visit us at www.uwic.ac.ukwctr). As a Reader and Professor I made significant
personal contributions to RAEs 2001 and 2008, wrote our 2008 submission and have once again been
tasked with coordinating our group for REF 2014.
During my 18 years at Cardiff Metropolitan University my research interests have developed into a
personal intellectual project that critically explores the interconnections between tourism, places and
identities, embracing issues of citizenship and social justice. In addition to publishing 18 books, 46
research articles and 38 book chapters in these areas of tourism inquiry, I have supervised 17 PhD
students to completion and examined in almost 20 universities around the world. My research has
also found resonance with place marketers and other stakeholder groups and I have consulted for and
advised several national and international public, private and voluntary organisations from Korea to
Croatia.
