3. Introduction
The Italian Navy naval base “Mar Grande” in
Taranto, opened in June 2004, was created to
improve efficency and to reduce the impact on the
city of the old Naval Base.
The Navy Station is placed over an area of about 60
hectares and it is the most magnificent achievement
of the Italian navy in the post-war period.
NIDEC ASI has contributed to this project by
providing the electric system of the 50/60Hz
conversion stations.

5. Rotating Converter System
The rotating converter systems are composed by:
• Qty.10 Motor-Generator sets 3000 kVA each, with a 10 pole synchronous motor
and a 12 pole synchronous generator, rigidly coupled for frequency conversion from
50 to 60Hz.
• Qty.2 (redundant) frequency converter to start-up each set and take it to the
synchronous speed
• Qty.20 exciter controls

13. Control System
The overall conversion system is managed via a control system PLC based with relevant HMI to
control and monitor its operation
The control system is in charge in particular of the automatic connection/disconnection of each
group in case of increased/decreased power needs.
