6. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
When creating my media product there were many considerations that I had to
take into account. The genre of my magazine is ‘Indie Rock’ I had to make sure the
conventions and forms within my print products suited this genre. I used forms
and conventions from two main magazine covers, ‘Q’ and ‘NME’.
I took this idea for my magazine from the
magazine ‘Q’ I tried various positions on the page
for this puff, however I feel that this looks the
most effective and professional.
When creating the masthead of the front cover, I tried various positions similar to
NME and Q magazine but the name of my magazine was too large. Therefore I
began to look at rock magazines such as Kerrang and decided to take a similar
form for my magazine, I feel that it looks good and is effective.
The overall layout of my front cover, I believe is effective, after carrying out
research on a number of different genres of magazine, I felt that my magazine
appeals to the suitable market for indie rock magazines. I change I made when
making my final cover was that existing products of similar genre to my magazine
were very crowded and full of information, I decided to change the layout for my
genre and make it look less crowded. I think this gives my magazine a professional
look.
I felt that the masthead had to be quite big so customers and readers can see it
well. Also as it isn't a well known magazine people may not automatically know
what magazine it is. Whereas NME and Q magazine, the masthead may be
smaller as it is a well known magazine and readers will know what magazine it is
just by looking at the layout.
7. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The genre of my magazine is indie rock, therefore the audience of my magazine is going to be young people that have a liking or interest
in indie rock music. The audience of my music magazine will be 14-25 year old that are interested in indie rock music. The readers of my
magazine will be in the income groups C2, D and E. Mainly younger men and women that like indie rock bands and music, they would be
interested in unsigned bands and smaller less mainstream bands, they are also likely to go and see these bands live.
The readers of my magazine will be expecting informal language, informal interviews with the bands that they like, they will also be
expecting a number of images of their proffered bands and musicians. They may also be interested and expect reviews on bands and
venues.
Before creating my magazines, I researched many different genres of magazines from pop to rap, I noticed that social groups were
represented well from the images, colours , text and layout used within the magazines. I then took my research further and began to
look at magazines of a similar genre to my magazine, indie rock. I noticed again that you could distinctly notice the social groups from
the colours, images, text and layout.
I have represented particular social groups through a variety of different ways within the magazine., after doing some research on
existing products and products of a similar gender I noticed that social groups were represented through the language and register of the
magazine, the colours, the images and the layout. I took this into account and used these aspects in my own magazine.
My media product represents social groups in ways such as the language and register. In many other indie rock magazines such as NME
or Q the language is very informal, there are many slang words used in these magazine too. The target market for these magazines are
similar to my target market, therefore I decided to use this kind of language and register in my own magazine, however as my magazine
is aimed at 14-25 year olds there isn't strong informal language used. Whereas in NME their target market it older so the language is
stronger. Overall, the language and register represents social groups that my magazine is aimed at.
I have also represented the social groups using the colour, layout and images in the magazine. In my magazine muted primary colours are
used, this represents the genre of the magazine however, it also represents the age group that the magazine is aimed at. The images also
represent the social groups, the images are suitable for the gender and age of the target market.
8. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
The genre of my magazine is indie rock, therefore the audience of my magazine is going to be young people that have a liking or
interest in indie rock music. The audience of my music magazine will be 14-25 year old that are interested in indie rock music. After
researching existing magazines with a similar genre to mine, I looked into media institutions that could possibly publish and distribute
my magazine.
NME is a music magazine that is very similar to my own music magazine: I looked into the publisher of NME and decided that this is
the kind of media institution that could potentially publish and distribute my music magazine. ICP have published magazines that have
a similar genre and target audience to my magazine, this is why I think that ICP might publish my magazine.
‘As the UK's leading consumer magazine
publisher we engage with 26m UK adults -
almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK
men. Our award winning portfolio of websites
reaches over 25 million users globally every
month.’
ICP are a well known and trust worthy business
that have a lot of experience within publishing
magazines. As they have a good record of being
professional and that they produce some of the
biggest magazines in the UK, I feel that ICP
would be suitable for publishing my magazine.
After researching other magazines that ICP have
published, I feel that this company would be the
right company to choose for publishing my
music magazine and helping it to become
successful within the music magazine industry.
9. Who would be the audience for your media product?
How did you attract/address your audience?
When conducting market research, I looked at magazines with the genre that I intended to make my music magazine. I looked at
various NME and Q covers, contents pages and double page spreads. I found that the main target market for these genre magazines
were teenagers and 20 year olds. I then decided to target my magazine at a similar audience.
From looking at existing products, I found that the colour schemes, images, language and register and layout used represented the
genre and target audience well. he genre of my magazine is indie rock, therefore the audience of my magazine is young people that
have a liking or interest in indie rock music. The audience of my music magazine are 14-25 year olds that are interested in indie rock
music.
The readers of my magazine are in the income groups C2, D and E. Mainly younger men and women that like indie rock bands and
music, are interested in unsigned bands and smaller less mainstream bands, they are also likely to go and see these bands live.
Because I new who my target audience are, I had to make decisions on the images, the colour scheme and the content. After
researching other magazines, I decided to go down a similar route with my own magazine. I chose my first colour scheme, it was bold
and consisted of primary colour. However, I after adding these colours to my cover I decided to change to colour scheme. I decided to
go with primary colours, representing the rock side of my genre and then muted these colours so it would be suitable for indie rock.
After deciding on my colour scheme, I then went on to make the decision on my images. I looked at the images taken on NME and Q, I
decided to take my pictures on a blank canvas so I could edit the background to suit the colours scheme and target market. After
editing these pictures and adjusting them, I am happy with the images on my magazine and I feel like they suit my target audience
well.
I then went on to add the content into my magazine, I wrote a story for my double page spread, I also had to consider the language
on all three pages of my magazine. Looking at existing magazines with a similar genre and target audience to mine, I knew that the
language and register of my magazine had to be informal with aspects of slang. However, as there are young teenagers that my
magazine is aimed at, I had to mute the language used so it was appropriate.
10. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
After spending a large amount of time making my music magazine, I feel that I have gained new skills regarding hardware, software
and different websites.
When I created my preliminary task, I used simple technological resources. However, when producing my music magazine I have used
for technical and complex resources. Firstly, the camera that I used to take the images for my magazine. I feel that I have learnt more
about the way the camera works and different settings on the camera. Working out how to use the different settings has helped me
get improved images to use in my music magazine.
I have also improved my skills on using fireworks. Before creating my music magazine I hadn’t used fireworks as much as I did when
creating the magazine, I feel that I have learnt many new features about the software that has helped me create my magazine to a
good quality level. Using different tools for the first time was mainly experimentation (I have screen shot this in my drafts) however, I
liked the outcome and decided to use these different tools in my final products. After trial and error with tools on fireworks, I knew
the outcome of each tool and this gave me an idea on how to use each of the effects and tools that fireworks has to offer.
I have also learned a lot about different websites used when completing the media products. Before creating my music magazine, I
had never used Slide Share or Blogger, the first time I used these websites I had to come to terms with how to navigate around the
sites and how to use them. Firstly I had to create my own Blogger account, this was an easy task as It was straight forward. However,
learning to posts blogs and manage my blog was more difficult, after persevering with Blogger, I now know how to add posts, edit
posts and change aspects of the blog. Another website that I had to learn how to use was Slide Share, this is a website that you
convert power point presentations into a form that can be presented into a blog. As well as persevering with Blogger, creating a Slide
Share account was a similar process. But after creating my media product I have better, in depth, knowledge of using these websites.
11. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
12. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to
the full product?
Looking at the final cover from my preliminary task and my final music magazine cover, I can see an improvement. The research and
planning, editing and final products for my music magazine are all better quality than my preliminary task. I feel that I conducted
better and thorough research for my music magazine task and this helped me to create a better quality product as I knew more about
existing products, my target market and the genre of magazine. The planning and editing was done more thoroughly for my music
magazine, for my prelim task I didn’t draft as much or experiment with different aspects of fireworks or my camera. Overall I think I
learnt a lot from the progression from the prelim task to the final music magazine product; I have developed my fireworks skills, I have
learnt how to use the tools and effects to a higher level to make my work look more professional. I have also learnt how to use my
camera properly, making full use of all the settings.
The progression from my prelim magazine to my final magazine has give me an insight on what an authentic, professional magazine
looks like, throughout the drafts of my magazines I noticed that my magazine grew to look more authentic magazine. The difference
between my prelim magazine and my final magazine you can see that my skills with using software has improved and my magazines
have improved because I learned to use software correctly.
Whilst making both, prelim magazine and final magazine, I have gained an amount of knowledge on the conventions of different
genres of magazine. I know now what represents the genres and conventions such as images, colour schemes, layout and language.
Also I feel like I have better confidence in my work, I am confidents write about different aspects of media such as language and
register, context and other evaluation points in my works. I have gained a greater understanding of media language, knowing what
terms means and implying them within my work.
Overall, I feel like I have improved massively from my preliminary task to my final products. I have learnt to make full use of resources
such as software, hardware and websites as well as developing my skills to use them. I think that I have learned a lot from progression
from my prelim to my final product, not just how to use fireworks but understanding technical media language and implementing it in
my work.
