OpenStreetMap (OSM) Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT mapping your first square using iD
1. Square will be released when the countdown has finished, unless you finish first!
2. I clicked on iD,
but this was my first screen
– need to click on Edit / Edit with iD
Very good walkthrough
– spend a few minutes on this.
3. Border of your square –
stay in the border
to avoid conflicts
Greyed out buttons
until you have zoomed in enough
Scale – need to zoom in to see anything
Click here
to check for
gps traces
4. Alter the background brightness if you wish
Select alternative satellite
imagery if needed – for custom,
click & paste from the job description
Make sure
'OpenStreetMap GPS traces'
is selected
5. Although the Project border is not visible, the high quality Bing imagery
indicates roughly where the border must be
Scale of 250m
the buttons are
now active
High quality
bing imagery
here
Low quality
or missing
bing imagery
Border of the square, but not the project
here
6. Approximate
border of
the project
At this zoom level (2km) on this project square, the existing OSM data is visible,
but you cannot click on it to see details.
Careful!
This circle is
outside the
border of your
square
Inside
the border
of your
square
7. 'Turn off'
the background
imagery to help
find the …..
Existing data on OSM
But you need to zoom in closer
8. Zooming to about 20m or 30m &
clicking on one of the existing features, you can check that the tags are okay
(HighWay Tag Africa?)
and that the feature accurately follows the imagery.
9. I've moved the 'building' so I can
see the image clearly below it.
Only 3 buildings in the area –
more likely to be agricultural
than residential, but
they are square with clear
shadows so materials
likely to have been brought in
by motor vehicle.
Light coloured areas
around the buildings are
where the ground has been
walked on.
10. I've decided this is a highway=track as it does not go to any residential buildings.
As I've traced it further it has become clearer & in the bottom right you can see where
There are now parallel tracks from vehicle wheels.
11. Path connects with the
highway, but
does not connect
with the buildings or the
'landuse=residential' border
landuse=residential
border around
the dwellings,
fairly close so
GIS officers
can make population
estimates.
Border is continuous
(start & finish connect).
Border does not connect
with buildings,
highways, or
other features.
highway=primary,
highway=secondary or
highway=tertiary
does not change
when it crosses a
landuse=residential border.
Most buildings are
either very round
(building=hut)
or have squared
corners.
If the building appears
diamond shaped, this
is probably because
the satellite camera
was at an angle to
the building.
Most buildings should
be mapped as having
squared corners.
highway=residential inside
The landuse=residential border
&
highway=unclassified outside
Both sections of the highway
are also tagged
surface=unpaved (could
also be surface=dirt
or something similar)
12. To get the changeset comment,
Return to the Task Manager,
'Instructions' Tab, and find the
instructions about the
changeset comment.
I've highlighted it, so I can use
copy & paste to transfer it
to the editing tab.
14. Carefully check the whole of your square
for any other features that need to be
Added.
When you are satisfied there is nothing
more to do, return to the Task Manager,
add a comment in the box, and click on
'Mark task as done'.
The square will be checked/validated by
another mapper, & they will also enter
a comment.
You can filter just the projects you have
completed squares for, from the first
screen of the Task Manager
15. Click on the Project, then the Stats tab, and scroll through the list to find your username
16. Hover your mouse over your username to see just the squares that have been
completed by you.
